Trumbull Corporation Will Complete Internal and External Renovations
To Pennsylvania's Second Busiest Roadway
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- PENNDOT today opened bids for the
rehabilitation project of the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel. Trumbull
Corporation is the apparent low bidder with an $84.2 million bid. Three
contractors submitted bids for the project.
Trumbull Corporation is responsible for the reconstruction of the Fort
Pitt Bridge and Tunnel in 2002 and 2003. In 2002, the contract calls for the
outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel to close to traffic between
April 6 and August 31. In 2003, the inbound lanes will close from March 31 to
August 30.
"Trumbull Corporation was selected based on their bid, expertise, and
their ability to complete the project on time," stated Ray Hack, district
engineer for PENNDOT. "This is the largest rehabilitation project in
southwestern Pennsylvania and will not only repair a major landmark, but the
region's busiest highway."
HDR Engineering, Inc. provided the design for the Fort Pitt Bridge and
Tunnel rehabilitation project. "This project includes a variety of traffic
and construction obstacles," said Ralph Gilbert, PE, senior vice president,
HDR Engineering, Inc. "Given the amount of commuters that travel this roadway
we needed to take careful steps in planning a compatible and effective
schedule to minimize impacts to the motorists."
Over 148,000 vehicles travel over the Fort Pitt Bridge daily.
The bid process utilized was different from the standard low bid process.
The selection takes into consideration the contractor's bid based on the
amount of money for manpower, materials and machinery along with the time the
Trumbull Corporation feels necessary to complete major components of the
project.
