AMARILLO, Texas, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Amarillo Biosciences, Inc.
(OTC Bulletin Board: AMAR.OB) announces the execution of a supply agreement
with Natrol, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTOL) for marketing of SALIVE(TM), a patented new
dietary supplement. SALIVE(TM) is the trade name for a pharmaceutical grade
anhydrous crystalline maltose, which has been tested by Amarillo Biosciences
in US human clinical trials and found to relieve complaints of dry mouth,
enhance salivary function, and promote oral comfort. Natrol, Inc. is a
leading distributor of nationally branded dietary supplements and will
distribute SALIVE(TM) exclusively in Canada and the USA under the name Natrol
Dry Mouth Relief.
Xerostomia (the medical term for dry mouth) is a common and significant
problem. Researchers estimate that at least 20% of the population over
50 years of age, as many as 15 million persons, suffer from persistent
complaints of dry mouth. If one includes people in the USA below 50 years of
age who often suffer from dry mouth, such as diabetics, Sjogren's syndrome (or
other rheumatic disease) patients, or those taking drugs which are known to
cause xerostomia, the US population with dry mouth probably exceeds 25 million
persons. SALIVE(TM) is a new dietary supplement offered as a solution to the
dry mouth problem. SALIVE(TM) offers a safe and simple approach to management
of this difficult clinical condition.
"I am pleased that Natrol will distribute Dry Mouth Relief in North
America. They have extensive experience in the field of dietary supplements
and an excellent distribution and marketing system. They should facilitate
the availability of this exciting new nutraceutical product to patients
throughout North America," said Joseph Cummins, President of Amarillo
Biosciences. "Amarillo Biosciences is now negotiating with other companies in
an effort to establish distribution of SALIVE(TM) worldwide. The revenues
from our nutraceutical business will allow Amarillo Biosciences to continue
development of our proprietary cytokine portfolio," continued Cummins.
SALIVE(TM) is the active ingredient in MAXISAL(TM) currently offered by
Amarillo Biosciences, Inc. to pharmacies and health food stores in Texas.
When Natrol, Inc launches their product nationwide in mid year 2001, Amarillo
Biosciences will withdraw MAXISAL(TM) from the US markets.
Amarillo Biosciences, founded in 1984, is a pioneer in the research of low
dose orally-administered interferon-alpha as a treatment for a variety of
conditions including Sjogren's syndrome, fibromyalgia syndrome, Behcet's
disease, hepatitis B, C, and opportunistic infections in patients who are HIV
positive.
