Nationwide Announces Retirement Plans of Donna A. James

    COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Nationwide Mutual Insurance
Company announced today the retirement of Donna A. James as President of
Nationwide Strategic Investments, effective March 31, 2006.  She was elected
to the position in 2003 and spent the past 25 years at the company.
    As president of Nationwide Strategic Investments, James is responsible for
developing new business opportunities in diversified financial services and
directing the management of several Nationwide affiliates, including
GatesMcDonald, Nationwide Advantage Mortgage Company, Nationwide Health Plans,
Financial Settlement Services and Nationwide Mutual Capital.
    "Donna has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for our long-term
effort to incubate and commercialize innovative new business opportunities,"
said Jerry Jurgensen, chief executive officer of Nationwide.  "She has been a
role model for career development at Nationwide and has mentored numerous
people who today serve in key management roles throughout our organization.
Donna's established an exemplary record of professional achievement, while
consistently demonstrating personal integrity and genuine concern for others
through her community involvement.  We will miss her passion, dedication,
innovative thinking, and most importantly, her ability to inspire her teams to
achieve greatness."  Jurgensen added that the transition of James'
responsibilities will be announced soon.
    In announcing her retirement plans, James, 48, said, "Looking back at my

    James previously served as Nationwide's executive vice president and chief
administrative officer with responsibility for human resources, corporate
communications and corporate administration.  Prior to that, she served as
assistant to the chairman and CEO.  She joined Nationwide in 1981.  She serves
on the boards of Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. and Limited Brands, Inc. and was
a former board member for both the United Way of America and Bennett College.
She also serves as an advisor for the North Carolina A&T State University
School of Business.
    Her past community service roles include: chair of the YWCA board of
trustees; the Columbus City Schools business advisory council; the Ohio
College Access Network; the I Know I Can board of trustees; the Ohio Supreme
Court Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline; the Client Security
Fund Commission; the Nationwide Federal Credit Union board of directors; The
Ohio State University Council of Women; the Central State University board of
trustees; the Wexner Center for the Arts board of trustees, and the Ohio 4-H
Foundation Board.
    While looking forward to a much deserved break from full-time work, James
plans to stay engaged in business by continuing to serve on the board of
directors of Coca-Cola Enterprises and Limited Brands.
