TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army has executed a Letter
of Agreement (LOA) paving the way for the sale of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN)
Stinger weapon systems to Lithuania.
The agreement with the government of Lithuania was signed at a ceremony in
Vilnius Nov. 13 by Lithuanian Minister of Defense Linas Linkevicious and U.S.
Ambassador to Lithuania, John F. Tefft. It is expected to result in an award
to Raytheon Company of approximately $21 million.
The Lithuanian government will procure the Low Altitude Surface-to-Air
Missile System (LASAMS) from the U.S. Army and Raytheon. This procurement
includes vehicle-mounted Stinger launch platforms, missiles, two
ThalesRaytheonSystems TPQ-64 Sentinel portable search and target acquisition
radars and associated training and support equipment.
"Lithuania's Stinger launch platform will be mounted on AM General High-
Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (Humvee)," said Duane Gooden, Raytheon
Stinger program director. The U.S. Army Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD)
project office is responsible for integrating the Stinger launch platform with
the host vehicle, and for overall integration of the complete LASAMS.
"The LASAMS procurement agreement has special significance for Lithuania
as it is a critical building block to qualify the country militarily for
admission into NATO," said Paul Walker, vice president, Land Combat Product
Line, Raytheon Missile Systems. "Coupled with its recent procurement of the
Raytheon-Lockheed Martin Javelin weapon system, Lithuania will possess the
necessary air defense and anti-tank self-defense capability to meet current
and future NATO missions."
