HOUSTON, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Five outstanding students are feeling a
little better about paying their college tuition today. Robert Eckels, County
Judge of Harris County, awarded April Castro, Brian Crittendon, Marisol

today. John Dunn, South Central U.S. Regional Manager of Siemens Energy and
Automation, presented the awards at Harris County's Commissioner's Court

Judge Eckels won $5,000 in scholarships for Harris County students from
the National Association of Counties (NACo) for outstanding governance and
strong leadership. The Caucus Courthouse award, which Siemens sponsors,
entitles the NACo member to select five outstanding students to receive $1,000
scholarships. Judge Eckels shared his award with the four other members of
Harris County Commissioners' Court and each of them selected a student to
receive a $1,000 scholarship.
"Siemens awards the NACo members who produce tangible results to improve
the lives of the people in their communities," says John Dunn. "To encourage
young people to continue this important task, members then select outstanding
students, like Carlos, April, William, Brian, and Marisol who may one day
become leaders in their communities."
"Siemens is an excellent partner for NACo because they are committed to
corporate responsibility. Their 65,000 U.S. employees also care about giving
back to society and getting involved," said Judge Eckels. "Together, Siemens
and NACo work to overcome critical issues facing counties, such as homeland
security, information technology, health and human services, and public
safety. This partnership, and the scholarships we are offering today, are
perfect examples of how the private and public sectors can work together to
make a difference."
The scholarship winners are encouraged to pursue higher education, a long-
standing value at Siemens. Last year, Siemens donated $3 million to American
education through scholarships, apprenticeship programs, and research grants
to more than 100 universities.
