Suncor Energy releases tenth annual climate change report

CALGARY, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Suncor Energy Inc. today
announced the release of its 10th Annual Progress Report on Climate Change.
The report details the company's 2003 greenhouse gas emissions for its
Canadian operations, as well as progress on specific reduction initiatives.
In 2003, Suncor's greenhouse gas emission intensity (emissions per unit
of production) decreased 4.7 per cent over the previous year, and represented
a 22.7 per cent decrease from 1990 levels. Suncor's total greenhouse gas
emissions for the year were 8.51 million tonnes. This is slightly lower than
2002 total emissions, even though Suncor's total production increased
approximately four per cent over the same period.
"We continue to make steady progress in our efforts to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions intensity in our operations," said Rick George, Suncor's
president and chief executive officer. "This annual report provides an
opportunity to stop and check our progress, and to reaffirm our commitment to
tackling this important issue."
Suncor's greenhouse gas management initiatives have resulted in total
reductions of 25.7 million tonnes between 1990 and 2003. However, because of
significant production growth during that period, total absolute emissions are
above the 1990 baseline.
"As Suncor continues to pursue our aggressive growth plans, it will be
essential to maintain our focus on managing greenhouse gas emissions," said
Rick George. "Becoming more energy efficient, using new technologies and
investing in renewable energy are some of the steps Suncor intends to pursue
to reduce our environmental footprint."
Suncor's greenhouse gas reduction efforts are guided by a seven-point
Climate Change Action Plan. The report outlines a number of concrete steps
taken in 2003 to reduce greenhouse gases, including investment in wind energy,
emission-reduction initiatives at Suncor's oil sands operation and efforts to
promote public education and awareness about climate change.
