                   Overcome Software Development Challenges

LEXINGTON, Mass., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL)
today announced that it has signed an agreement with technical publisher
Addison-Wesley (AW) to publish chapters of software development books on the
Rational Developer Network(SM) (http://www.rational.net).
This content, which will be updated regularly, will be available on the
Books Central Knowledge Center on the Rational Developer Network. This is the
first such relationship for Addison-Wesley.
The Rational Developer Network is a Web site that provides targeted
content and skill-building resources to Rational customers, increasing their
development efficiency and mastery of Rational's tools and best practices.
"We're very pleased to work with Addison-Wesley to continue to deepen the
highly-relevant content offered to our customers on the Rational Developer
Network," said Dan Shiffman, senior vice president, Intellectual Property
Group, Rational Software. "The comprehensive offerings on the Rational
Developer Network provide customers context specific information and focused
guidance to help overcome the challenges faced throughout the software
development lifecycle."
"We believe that the Rational Developer Network is a valuable resource for
software developers," said Paul Becker, senior editor of Addison-Wesley.
"Addison-Wesley has a long history of working with Rational's thought leaders,
including Grady Booch, and we are thrilled to extend this relationship by
providing high-level content to the Rational Developer Network."
Several of the books will be from The Addison-Wesley Object Technology
Series, which is edited by Rational Software's Grady Booch, Ivar Jacobson, and
Jim Rumbaugh, as well as AW's Software Patterns Series and Component Software
Series. Technical experts and editors from Rational, including Grady Booch,
will work closely with AW to select the appropriate books and their respective
chapters for the Rational Developer Network's audience.
Rational will be able to offer its customers access to selected chapters
from existing and new books, as well as from books that are currently in
progress. Each AW chapter will have a title and short abstract on the main
