Raytheon Awarded $96.2 Million For AIM-9X Low Rate Initial Production 3 Contract

    TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has
received a $96.2 million contract for continued production of the AIM-9X
Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile.  The award was made by the U.S.
Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md.
    The firm-fixed-price contract includes 599 AIM-9X tactical and training
missiles as well as AIM-9X specific support and test equipment.
    "I am pleased to award this contract to our industry partner, Raytheon,"
said Navy Capt. Scott Stewart, the Naval Air Systems Command program manager
for Air-to-Air Missile Systems. "This is the third LRIP (low rate initial
production) award and will deliver critically needed capability to our
forces."
    AIM-9X is currently undergoing Operational Evaluation (OPEVAL) by both the
U.S. Navy and Air Force to determine its overall readiness for each service.
The OPEVAL segment of testing consists of 22 guided launches, numerous hours
of captive flight evaluation, and extensive testing of the associated logistic
equipment.
    "By delivering on our commitments, we have kept our promise to provide
AIM-9X to our most important customer, the war fighter," said Chuck Anderson,
vice president of Raytheon's air-to-air product line.  "We are now set to
begin full rate production next year after the completion of the OPEVAL."
    Work will be performed at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Ariz., and
is to be completed in April 2005.
    The AIM-9X is a joint U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force program currently in
engineering and manufacturing development.  It is the newest member of the
AIM-9 Sidewinder short range missile family in use by more than 40 nations.
