Raytheon, Hellenic Navy Sign Phalanx Contract

    TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ --
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has signed a direct commercial sale contract with
the Hellenic Navy for five Phalanx Block 1A Close-In Weapon Systems. The first
system will be delivered in two years, and the work is to be completed in 28
months.
"This is a very significant agreement for both the Hellenic Navy and
Raytheon Company," said Dennis Carroll, Raytheon's Phalanx program manager in
Tucson. "With this work, the Hellenic Navy, which operates entirely in a
littoral environment, will have more than 20 Phalanx systems in their fleet,
thus providing the tested and proven reliability of the world's premier ship
self-defense system."
One of the Phalanx systems will be mounted on a new oiler currently being
fitted out in Greece. The other systems will be landed on ADRIAS-Class
frigates. Of the five mounts covered in the contract, three will be upgrades
of systems currently owned by the Hellenic Navy, and the other two will be
delivered under an idle asset agreement between Raytheon and the United States
Navy. That agreement allows Raytheon to obtain two Phalanx Block 0 mounts from
the Navy's long-term holding area, restore the units to accepted standards,
and sell them to the Hellenic Ministry of Defence. In exchange, the United
States Navy Inventory Control Point, headquartered in Philadelphia, receives
from Raytheon new Phalanx spare assets to be used on systems already deployed
in the U.S. fleet.
Phalanx is an autonomous, computer-controlled radar and 20-mm rapid-fire
gun system that automatically acquires, tracks and destroys enemy threats that
have penetrated all other ship defense systems. More than 850 systems have
been built and deployed in the navies of 21 nations.

With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global
technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, and
business and special mission aircraft.
