New HELIOS (TM) Oxygen System From Mallinckrodt Removes Barriers Typically Associated With Home Oxygen Therapy

Revolutionary System Encourages Greater Patient Compliance and Mobility

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) announced
today that it has received FDA clearance to market its breakthrough
Puritan-Bennett HELiOS(TM) oxygen system that provides new levels of comfort,
convenience and mobility to people on long-term oxygen therapy. The company
expects to begin shipping products in the first quarter of calendar 2000.
Smaller and lighter than other oxygen units currently on the market, the
unique HELiOS oxygen system is worn by patients and does not require
cumbersome tubes or heavy canisters. This freedom enables patients to pursue
a full range of activities. The HELiOS oxygen system also lasts longer
between refills, making it highly economical.
For a typical home oxygen patient, the new HELiOS oxygen system:
-- Provides a complete ambulatory supply of oxygen which allows patients
to breathe from the portable unit all day, every day.
-- Features a portable oxygen unit that weighs less than 3.4 pounds and
provides 10 hours of use between fillings.
-- Is easily refilled from the home reservoir in about 40 seconds.
-- Can be worn on a convenient waist belt, shoulder strap, or backpack.
-- With as few as eight deliveries per year, can be the most cost-
       effective oxygen modality.
-- Includes a standard interface for the Teleview(TM) Remote Monitoring
System that will allow providers to monitor the reservoir contents in
their office on a standard PC with modem.

"The HELiOS oxygen system removes the barriers of home oxygen therapy,"
said Gerald R. Mattys, vice president and general manager of Mallinckrodt's
Alternate Care business. "At Mallinckrodt, we are committed to providing
products that improve the health and quality of life for long-term oxygen
patients around the world. We've clearly done that with the HELiOS oxygen
system.
"For the first time, a single device, which can be worn 24 hours a day,
provides an oxygen therapy option that addresses the needs of patients,
physicians and home care dealers alike. Without bulky, heavy equipment that
needs frequent refills, patients can return to a more active, healthy
lifestyle. To sleep, patients simply connect the portable unit to the system
reservoir and continue to breathe easily. I think patients will love the
small size, quiet operation and long-lasting duration."
