SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Red Hat Inc. and Tibco Software Inc. shares
dominated volume during Wednesday's extended session after the companies
impressed investors with their quarterly results.
The Nasdaq-100 After Hours Indicator, which tracks the evening action of
the index's leading shares, was last up 0.15 point to 1.670.76.
Red Hat Inc. shares jumped more than 4% to $27.80 after the company
reported third-quarter net income of $23.2 million. Diluted per-share earnings
were 12 cents. The Raleigh, N.C.-based company reported total revenue of $73.1
million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had forecast third-quarter
earnings of 9 cents a share on revenue of $71 million.
Tibco Software Inc. shares soared more than 9% to $7.99 after the company
reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $26.6 million, or 12 cents a share.
Earnings on an adjusted basis were $21.8 million, or 10 cents a share. Total
revenue rose to $134.4 million from $125.7 million a year ago. Palo Alto,
Calif.-based Tibco also said its board approved an 18-month plan to buy back
up to $100 million of its common shares
Research in Motion shares advanced almost 5% to $64.82 after the company
reported third-quarter net earnings of $120.2 million, or 61 cents a share. on
revenue of $560.6 million. Earnings on an adjusted basis were $139.1 million,
or 71 cents a share.
The maker of the BlackBerry handheld e-mail devices maintained its
earnings and revenue forecasts for the fourth quarter. It also sees first-
quarter earnings of 77 cents to 84 cents on revenue of $610 million to $650
million.
Micron Technology Inc. shares lost almost 2% to $13.86 after the company
reported first-quarter profit of $62.6 million, or 9 cents a share on revenue
of $1.36 billion. Revenue for the semiconductor company totaled $1.36 billion,
up from $1.26 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts expected the
semiconductor company to earn 11 cents a share, on $1.34 billion in revenue.
Cognos Inc. shares rose 1% to $34.35 after the company announced third-
quarter profit of $28.3 million, or 31 cents a share, on revenue of $212.3
million. Analysts expected the business software company to earn 29 cents a
share on revenue of $210.9 million.
Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. shares dropped 5% to $39.15 after the company said
that third-quarter profit rose to $134.6 million, or 45 cents a share, on
revenue of $1.45 billion. Earnings matched analysts' average estimate but
revenue fell short of forecasts for $1.47 billion in sales.
3Com Corp. slipped 0.5% to $3.72 after the company reported a net loss of
$10.7 million, or 3 cents a share, on revenue of $184.3 million. Analysts were
expecting a loss of 8 cents a share on revenue of $190.2 million.
Paychex Inc. shares lost 1.5% to $41.25 after the company reported second-
quarter net earnings of $111.6 million, or 30 cents a share on revenue of
$399.8 million. Analysts had expected the payroll and human resources services
provider to report earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $398 million.
Finish Line Inc. shares shed 8% to $16.38 after the company reported
third-quarter net earnings of $845,000, or 2 cents a share, compared with
$2.22 million, or 4 cents a share, during the year-earlier period. The
athletic specialty retailer reported quarterly revenue of $274 million,
compared with $235.3 million last year.
