Fourteen Major League Baseball Players to Compete Against Each Other and
Their Fans in New Online Video Game League
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- GGL, Major League
Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), Boras Marketing and New York Yankee star
centerfielder Johnny Damon today announced the formation of the
Professional Baseball Video Game League (PBGL), in which some of pro
baseball's best players will battle online against each other and their
fans. GGL, Boras Marketing and MLBAM have entered into a joint venture to
unite the culture of video games with the national pastime.
"The PBGL is not a fantasy baseball league, but rather the ultimate
online video competition featuring real MLB players and fans who live for
the game," said Ted Owen, Chairman and Founder of GGL. "By bringing
together our nation's traditional pastime and the fastest growing
entertainment medium in the world, we're striving to make online video game
competitions as much a part of American culture as baseball and apple pie."
Damon will serve as League Commissioner for the PBGL's inaugural
season, which kicks off this week with the first competitions on the
league's chosen game, Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing(R) 3 for Xbox 360.
The PBGL roster includes some of baseball's rising young stars, who
were secured through GGL's exclusive relationship with Boras Marketing.
Season one players include: Craig Hansen (Boston Red Sox), Julian Tavarez
(Boston Red Sox), Matt Holliday (Colorado Rockies), Willy Taveras (Colorado
Rockies), Prince Fielder (Milwaukee Brewers), Josh Barfield (Cleveland
Indians), Corey Patterson (Baltimore Orioles), Rodrigo Lopez (Baltimore
Orioles), Derek Lowe (Los Angeles Dodgers), Seth McClung (Tampa Devil
Rays), Mike Pelfrey (New York Mets), Luke Hochevar (Kansas City Royals) and
Dallas McPherson (Los Angeles Angels).
"GGL is bringing together two of my biggest passions -- baseball and
video games -- in a way that neither baseball fans nor video gamers have
seen before," said Commissioner Damon. "Both baseball and video games play
a huge role in today's culture in the US and around the world, and the PBGL
is doing a great job of bringing these two communities together."
"More importantly, the PBGL is allowing me to invoke another passion of
mine -- the Wounded Warrior Project, which raises funds and awareness for
wounded veterans," continued Damon." As Commissioner, I'm proud to add
former U.S. Army Sergeant Steven Andrew Robison of Kansas City, Missouri,
to this season's PBGL line-up."
"We are thrilled that GGL has provided the opportunity for a group of
our clients to participate in this new and exciting league," said Tyler
Beckstrom at Boras Marketing. "It gives the players involved one more way
to reach out and engage their fans while not taking away from their busy
off-season work- out schedules."
"GGL's experience with online video game competitions and creating
social networking for game players makes them a natural partner to create
the PBGL," said Leslie Gittess, Vice President of Business Development for
MLBAM. "MLB Advanced Media is pleased to support the PBGL and we look
forward to a spirited competition among the participating professional
baseball players and their fans."
