- 4.7 million copies coming hot off the presses
- Report highlights communications networks for the 'next generation'
MURRAY HILL, N.J., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- As the most widely held stock
in the U.S., Lucent Technologies boasts the largest print run of any Annual
Report in corporate America. This week, 4.7 million copies featuring the
world's "next generation" will be hitting the streets and the Web.
This year's Annual Report highlights the theme, "Communications Networks
for the Next Generation," and showcases the current generation of children who
will be living in a networked world where access to information, entertainment
and education will be instantaneous. As the global leader in communications
networking, Lucent will be one of the key companies that makes that future
possible.
In his message to shareowners, Chairman and CEO Rich McGinn highlights the
financial, technology and business developments that led to the company's 20
percent revenue growth to $38 billion for 1999. Still, he notes that Lucent
has steadily added new capabilities, both through Bell Labs innovations and
the acquisition of new technology and talent. "A key to Lucent's success has
been our willingness and our ability to constantly reinvent our company to
succeed in an industry that is constantly reinventing itself," said McGinn.
"Our Annual Report is the single most visible communication we produce
each year," said Steve Aaronson, Lucent's director of global corporate
communications. "Both in print and on the Web, the report helps give the
company a friendly face and helpful personality. It also illustrates high-
tech industry trends, financial facts and figures, and contains photos that
recognize our customers and employees around the world.
"It's a huge undertaking," he said. "From the creative design to the
monumental production run, we consider every detail carefully because of the
scope and importance of the Annual Report. The end result is the product of a
year-long, worldwide collaboration among hundreds of employees, dozens of
customers and a crack team of vendors."
After 10 days of round-the-clock printing, the 4.7 million copies make for
one whale of a production run -- or 12 whales if you're counting. The final
production would fill 95 truckloads, weigh the equivalent of 12 blue whales,
and measure 75,000 miles -- or three trips around the equator -- if each sheet
were laid end to end.
Lucent's Annual Report will be shipped out to its 4.6 million shareowners
beginning this week, and an on-line version is available at
http://www.lucent.com/investor/annual/99. The on-line version has been
designed for its Web-based audience to be quickly and easily accessible, and
portions are available in six languages -- English, Chinese, Japanese,
Spanish, French, and German.
