MIDDLETOWN, Pa., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Injured Philadelphia Eagles wide
receiver Terrell Owens' hopes for a speedy recovery from an ankle injury - and
the Eagles' hopes of postseason glory - are tied partly to a sophisticated
underwater treadmill made by HydroWorx in Harrisburg, PA.
"The pool," as it is often referred to by trainers like the Eagles' Rick
Burkholder, is a HydroWorx 2000 - the most advanced of several underwater
treadmill designs made by the company.
The HydroWorx pool has become a cornerstone of many professional and
amateur sports training and rehabilitation facilities. The floor of the
HydroWorx 2000 is an 8-by-12-foot treadmill that can be raised to floor level
and lowered inside the pool to a depth of six feet.
Several pro and college teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, San
Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Lions, Stanford University, the
University of Kansas and Texas A&M University, own HydroWorx underwater
treadmills. The HydroWorx pools have been instrumental in speeding recovery
time for hip, leg, knee and ankle injuries.
Owens is listed as 6'-3", 226 pounds - too much for an injured joint to
handle on dry land. Submerged in water to his chest on the HydroWorx
treadmill, however, Owens would weigh about 45 pounds - roughly 20 percent of
his body weight.
By walking or running on the leg sooner, the player can more quickly
regain the strength and range of motion needed to return to the game.
