PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to a voluntary recall
by Vern's Moses Lake Meats of raw beef that may have been exposed to bovine
spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), Fred Meyer is asking customers of 75 stores
in Oregon, southern Washington, Idaho, and Utah to return the following
product to their stores for full refunds:
-- Interstate Meat pre-packaged fresh ground beef patties with
approximately one pound of 85% lean (15% fat) ground beef and a sell-by
date of December 25, 2003.
Interstate notified Fred Meyer that only eight cases containing a total of
96 packages of ground beef patties were shipped to Fred Meyer that are subject
to the Vern's recall.
This targeted voluntary recall follows a broader precautionary measure
Fred Meyer took on Wednesday, December 24, when all Interstate Meat products
were withdrawn from sale while awaiting more information from Interstate.
The USDA stated that there is an extremely low likelihood that the beef
being recalled contains any infectious agent. Rather, the product is being
recalled out of an abundance of caution. The USDA said it remains confident
in the safety of our food supply and that the risk to human health from BSE is
extremely low.
Fred Meyer is headquartered in Portland, Ore. and has a total of 134
multidepartment stores in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, and Utah. Fred
