San Jose Mercury News Plans Online Y2K Global Coverage

        Correspondents Will Report News Updates From Strategic Points
                             Throughout the World

    SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercury Center
http://www.mercurycenter.com, the pioneering online edition of the San Jose Mercury
News, will report around the clock news coverage on Y2K developments as they
happen across the globe. The Web site will feature breaking stories from
correspondents on "Millennium Journal," a weblog that chronicles news and
information on Y2K's impact. Live coverage begins at 6 a.m., Pacific Standard
Time (PST) on December 31, 1999 and will run until the wee hours of the
morning on January 1, 2000.
    Senior Online Editor John Murrell and Good Morning Silicon Valley Editor
John Paczkowski will host live coverage with a running narrative consisting of
commentary, news/notebook items, links to Y2K sites, input from readers,
discussion forums and photo slide shows.
    Based on strategic continents, Mercury News staff reporters will provide
news updates, beginning in New Zealand and continuing through Asia, Europe,
and North America.
    Chris O'Brien will provide millennium coverage from New Zealand, as
midnight arrives there first. Mark McDonald will file from India,
Michelle Quinn will file from England, Cecilia Kang will file from Japan,
Michael Dorgan will file from China, Ricardo Sandoval will file from Mexico
and Lori Montgomery will file from Russia.
    Turning to national coverage, Jim Puzzanghera will monitor East Coast
developments from Washington D.C. and Michael Bazeley will report from
Las Vegas, Nevada. Daniel Vasquez will report from Seattle, Washington,
John Woolfolk from Big Sur and Elliott Almond and Cheryl Devall will be
reporting from southern California. A full force of reporters will be on hand
to cover Bay Area events as they unveil.
    Jon Healey will be based at the Symantec headquarters in Santa Monica,
which will be watching for computer viruses triggered by the new year.
    Technology columnist Dan Gillmor will post breaking technology news and
commentary several times daily on his recently launched online column called
eJournal (weblog.mercurycenter.com/ejournal). An interactive forum is featured
for users to provide feedback on posted stories.
