ImmuLogic Receives Clearance for Cocaine Vaccine IND

WALTHAM, Mass., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- ImmuLogic Pharmaceutical
Corporation (Nasdaq: IMUL) today announced the FDA clearance of an IND
application for a cocaine vaccine therapeutic product.
"The IND was filed on October 29, 1997 in preparation for a planned
Phase I clinical trial for the first quarter 1998" said Joseph Marr, M.D.,
President and Chief Operating Officer of ImmuLogic Pharmaceutical Corporation.
"There are currently no medications approved specifically for treating cocaine
addiction. The vaccine technology is a novel approach to address the unmet
need in substance abuse treatment."
ImmuLogic previously reported the award of a $2.2M grant from the National
Institute on Drug Abuse to fund development of the cocaine vaccine for the
treatment of cocaine addiction.
The cocaine vaccine therapeutic is based on vaccination of cocaine addicts
with a cocaine-protein conjugate. The treatment is expected to induce an
anti-cocaine antibody response which reduces the entry of cocaine into the
brain. As a result, it is anticipated that the psychopharmacological effect
of the drug will be reduced. The product is designed to be used in
conjunction with a behavioral modification treatment program.
