American Stores Company Announces Quarterly Dividend

    SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of American
Stores Company (NYSE: ASC) today declared a quarterly cash dividend on
American Stores Company common stock of 9 cents per common share.  The
dividend is payable January 2, 1998, to shareholders of record on December 19,
1997.
