ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Centura Bank (NYSE: CBC) today
became one of the nation's first financial institutions to offer Internet
users online banking and bill payment services using BankNOW(TM) Internet
Edition software developed by Intuit, makers of the leading financial software
Quicken(R).
Today's announcement is the latest step in Centura's online banking
expansion, which includes today's release of a new web site and the planned
introduction of Internet banking for a range of banking services by year-end.
Centura was one of the first banks to introduce online banking and bill
payment through Quicken in late 1995.
"We are continuing to enhance our online capabilities as security has
reached the level appropriate to protect Internet banking transactions and
more clients want to do banking on the Internet," said B. Thomas Rogers Jr.,
Centura's chief knowledge officer. "Intuit is a great partner with cutting-
edge technology, and this adds a new choice for people who prefer the Internet
as a means to access the online features of personal finance software."
Centura clients using BankNOW Internet Edition can easily check account
balances, schedule bills to be paid and transfer funds between accounts.
BankNOW features a single-screen design that requires no navigation and allows
users to see the impact of a payment before it is sent, thereby avoiding an
overdraft on the account.
Centura and Intuit initially offered BankNOW on America Online(R), but
beginning today users can access BankNOW directly via the Internet. The
software can be downloaded from Centura's web site (http://www.centura.com) or from
the Quicken Financial Network web site (http://www.quicken.com). The service will be
priced like Centura's other Online Money Management options: online banking is
free and online bill payment is $5.95 per month with no restrictions on the
number of transactions.
BankNOW transactions are protected with a personal identification number
(PIN) that consumers use to authenticate each banking transaction. Security
measures also feature a 1024-bit master RSA key encryption for session key
exchange and 128-bit triple DES encryption for data encryption. BankNOW
Internet Edition uses VeriSign Digital Certification technology to assure
customers they are downloading authentic BankNOW software from Intuit off the
Internet.
Centura's web site has been redesigned effective today to be simpler,
fresher and prepared to handle banking transactions when the company
introduces broader Internet banking capabilities by the end of 1997 with the
help of Security First Technologies. It will be updated regularly by
Centura's webmaster and TriNet Services, Inc.
With assets of $6.4 billion, Centura provides a complete line of banking,
investment, insurance and trust services to individuals and businesses in

traditional and supermarket financial stores; more than 275 ATM locations,
