Sophisticated Technology Currently In Use In Fulcrum-Based Project At
European Space Agency
OTTAWA, Canada, June 5 /PRNewswire/ - Fulcrum Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:
FULCF; TSE: FUL) today announced that it has agreed to purchase the advanced
clustering technology developed by Central Research Laboratories Ltd. (CRL) a
commercial research and development organization which was formerly the
corporate research arm of THORN EMI (now EMI Group PLC). CRL is the company
behind other wide-reaching innovations, such as neural networks in data
mining, and advances in three-dimensional image and sound projection for use
in virtual reality applications. It invented and developed a number of
now-familiar technologies, including stereophonic sound and the Nobel
Prize-winning CAT Scanner. CRL's clustering technology has been used in
conjunction with Fulcrum(R) software in extensive projects for the military
intelligence communities and the European Space Agency. Under the agreement,
expected to be formally signed next week, Fulcrum will pay C$1.5 million
(US$1.1 million) to acquire this technology.
``Clustering'' is the term used to describe the ability of software to
analyze and automatically categorize documents based on their content and in
relation to other documents in a collection. The acquisition will allow
Fulcrum to deliver products in the first half of 1998 that leverage CRL's
``neural network'' technology for ``concept extraction'' to automatically
classify and categorize documents relative to other information and to
automate filing and organization of information according to content. The CRL
technology is also expected to be used to enhance the already advanced
features of the recently launched Fulcrum Knowledge Network(TM), such as
automatic document summarization and the personalized and custom views into an
organization's information -- the Knowledge Map. The agreement also provides
that the principal architect of this technology will join Fulcrum on
secondment from CRL, to lead productization efforts as part of Fulcrum's R&D
team.
``Fulcrum is solidifying its lead in delivering advanced knowledge
management software,'' said Eric Goodwin, chairman and chief executive officer
of Fulcrum. ``We are introducing this sophisticated technology into our
products in a way that is particularly suited to enterprise knowledge
management solutions. Our goal is to provide our customers with the best
technologies available, and to implement these technologies in a way that
meets business needs.''
``We have been a Fulcrum customer for years, and a partner for almost as
long, with important customers in common,'' said Andrew Parkes, group manager
of the Aerospace and Transport Division of Central Research Laboratories
Limited. ``This agreement has grown out of a long, mutually rewarding
collaboration. With its recently-launched Fulcrum Knowledge Network product,
Fulcrum is the ideal candidate to realize the commercial potential of the
advanced clustering technology we developed.''
