ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Centura Bank (NYSE: CBC)
announced today the introduction of a Community Centered Banking program for
the Raleigh-Durham area. Community Centered Banking is a special program
offered by Centura to make financial information and banking services more
accessible to urban consumers through partnerships with community churches.
The program, which is operated in the participating churches, offers
members checking accounts and affordable loan products as well as
educational seminars. The seminars will include a variety of money management
topics such as "Budgeting Your Money" and "How To Qualify For A Mortgage
Loan." Participants can also attend a series of home ownership workshops
that will allow them to receive pre-qualification certificates for mortgage
loans with Centura once the workshops are completed.
Participating churches will receive contributions for accounts that are
opened by their members which will then be used by the churches to
help serve their communities.
Centura will kick off this program on Sunday, February 22, 1998 with an
orientation meeting from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in Durham (201
Foster Street). Members of more than 50 area churches have been invited and
it is anticipated that over 2,000 will attend. U.S. Representative Eva
Clayton will also be in attendance.
To offer Community Centered Banking, Centura has teamed up with P.T. &
Associates, a consulting group that currently operates similar programs in
churches in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. P.T. & Associates started the
program in 1991 with Huntington Bank in Columbus, Ohio and it is estimated
that over $90 million in mortgage pre-qualification certificates have been
issued by participating banks since the program's inception.
The success of the P.T. & Associates Community Centered Banking program
has gained national attention and the news media as a model for programs in
other urban areas across the country.
With assets of $7.1 billion, Centura provides a complete line of banking,
investment, leasing, insurance and trust services to individuals and
businesses throughout North Carolina and the Hampton Roads region of Virginia.
Services are provided through 192 financial service centers, including 20
