Starmet Corporation Announces Receipt of ISO 9002 Certification

CONCORD, Mass., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Starmet Corporation,
(Nasdaq: STMT) today announced the successful completion of ISO 9002
certification for its Concord, MA, manufacturing activities. ISO 9002 is part
of an international quality standard, recognized worldwide. Developed in 1987
by the International Organization for Standardization, it is regarded by both
manufacturers and customers as an assurance of independent quality assessment.
The ISO 9002 Standard encompasses 20 distinct elements, internationally
regarded as keys to a strong quality management system.
The Company used TUV America, a subsidiary of TUV Bayern Group, based in
Munich Germany, as the certifying registrar. TUV America is a leading North
American Registrar providing professional ISO registration services to a
variety of manufacturing and service industries in North America.
The ISO 9002 designation follows a previous distinction for quality
manufacturing achievement, awarded by the US Army Materiel Command to the
Company in May of 1997 under the Army's "Contractor Performance Certification
Program." (CP)2 employs extensive use of metrics as quality performance
indicators and objective measurements that show historical trends in relation
to stated goals.
Bob Quinn, President of Starmet, in commenting on the ISO-9002
certification designation indicated, "In the ever increasing competitive world
of manufacturing, specifically in aerospace products, this quality
certification provides reassurance to our customers, that they can count on
our products to be integrated successfully within their equipment or system.
Large aerospace prime contractors, like Lockheed Martin Corporation, Starmet's
largest aerospace customer, are supporting the trend in the aerospace and
defense industry to reduce the number of suppliers based on choosing only
those who meet increasingly stringent quality/reliability criteria. Achieving
ISO-9002 and (CP)2 certifications represents three years of hard work by all
Starmet employees and is testimony to our corporate desire to deliver low
cost, high value products and services to our customers."
Starmet Corporation, formerly Nuclear Metals, Inc., is a diversified
metallurgical technology company based in Concord, Massachusetts.
