RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- James River Corporation (NYSE: JR)
announced today that Gordon B. Bonfield, III, 45, has been named president of
the company's Packaging Business, succeeding Norman K. Ryan, who is retiring.
    Mr. Bonfield joined James River in 1988 as vice president, carton group,
and was serving as senior vice president, operations, of the Packaging
Business prior to his promotion.  A twenty-year veteran of the packaging
industry, Mr. Bonfield came to James River from Packaging Corporation of
America, where he had been vice president and general manager of its carton
business.
    Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, James River's Packaging Business is a
leading manufacturer of retail packaging for food and other consumer products.
With a current annual sales rate of over $800 million, this business accounts
for 15 percent of the company's $5.5 billion in annual sales.  The business
manufacturers a broad line of packaging used by consumers including cereal,
dry food and ice cream cartons; microwaveable and frozen food packaging; and
pharmaceutical and medical packaging.  The business employs approximately

    A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mr. Bonfield holds a bachelor's degree in

business administration degree from Ohio State University.  He currently
serves on the board of directors of the Paperboard Packaging Council.
