Centura Opens First Bank In Hannaford Supermarket

    ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Centura Bank (NYSE: CBC)
opened its first bank in a Hannaford supermarket in Raleigh, N.C., this
weekend, the first of 33 financial stores it will open in Hannaford in the
Carolinas and Virginia by the end of 1997.
    The in-store Center Banking Center is located in the Hannaford Food & Drug
at 2900 Wake Forest Road, at the intersection with Six Forks Road. It will be
staffed by a team of Centura financial services officers seven days a week,
from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from Noon to 6 p.m. on
Sundays.
    Unlike some supermarket banks, Centura offers a full range of financial
services in the Hannaford store, including checking and savings accounts,
certificates of deposit, money market accounts, loans, credit cards,
insurance, mutual funds, securities and more. It will have an ATM, a private
office for consultations, phones linked to the Centura Highway telephone
banking center and convenient access for clients in a hurry. Centura employees
will circulate in the store, talking with shoppers about their financial
needs.

financial service they need quickly and easily, without having to make a
special trip to the bank," said Cecil W. Sewell Jr., president of Centura.

a week."
    Centura will open four more banking centers in Hannaford stores in Raleigh
and Cary within the next month. By the end of the year, Centura plans to open
a total of 12 banks in Hannaford stores in North Carolina, in addition to one
already open in a Hickory Harris Teeter. By the end of next year, Centura will
have more than 30 supermarket Banking Centers in the Carolinas and Virginia,
and will be the largest operator of supermarket banks in North Carolina.
