Custom API Developed Jointly by Red Brick and BMC Software
Offers Significant Speed Improvement in Backup and Recovery
LOS GATOS, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Brick(R) Systems, Inc.
(Nasdaq: REDB), The Data Warehouse Company(R), today announced that SQL-
BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse, Red Brick's new comprehensive backup and
recovery solution, offers data warehouse administrators a significant
advantage in terms of performance, flexibility, security and ease of use for
critical data warehouse projects that require minimal data downtime and an
enterprise-wide backup and recovery plan.
SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse uses a custom, native API that gives
SQL-BackTrack direct access to Red Brick Warehouse, enabling performance
optimizations that speed backup and recovery functions. This native access to
Red Brick Warehouse is designed to provide users an overall performance gain
that improves the speed of backup and recovery and reduces the time, cost and
administrative overhead normally assigned to data backup and recovery
functions.
"We are very pleased to be able to offer a backup and recovery solution
based on BMC's product that is tailored specifically for Red Brick," said
Chris Erickson, president and CEO of Red Brick. "SQL-BackTrack is regarded
throughout the database industry as one of the best solutions for backup and
recovery. We're very pleased that this reliability, as well as improved speed
in backup and recovery through native access, will provide our customers data
safety as they develop very large databases in data warehousing."
"SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse brings a new level of
administrative competency to data warehousing," said Leland Putterman, vice
president of worldwide marketing at BMC Software. "The combined effort of Red
Brick and BMC Software resulted in a great product that will become a defacto
standard in Red Brick environments."
Product Features
SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse, jointly designed by Red Brick and
BMC Software's DataTools, automates many administrative tasks while
maintaining very-large-database safety, consistency and speed of recovery.
The product offers features designed specifically for data warehousing such as
reducing the complexities in managing large-scale data warehouse systems,
helping to improve administrative productivity, ensuring high data
availability, saving disk storage space and efficiently tracking and auditing
backed-up files.
SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse provides functionality in three
categories: backup, recovery and data management. Each of these areas is
designed for high-performance, ease-of-use, flexibility and security in a data
warehouse environment.
High Performance
SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse performs physical backups for fast
backup and fast recovery.
* Online backup enables users of the warehouse to continue working while a
backup is performed.
* Incremental backup enables backup of only changed data.
* High performance data compression can further reduce backup time as well
as save storage space.
* Parallel backup streams enable backing up to multiple devices
simultaneously for even higher throughput.
* Recovery is fast because SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse restores
full and incremental backups in the appropriate order automatically, so
database users get back to work quickly -- with minimum downtime.
Ease-of-use
The convenience and automation features of data warehouse-aware SQL-
BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse enable preconfiguring and running of backups
with a single command, so it is easy to run both unattended and ad hoc
backups.
* The product automatically records online information about backups,
including the time and date, backup type, backup media and database
allocation.
* SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse maintains an online backup
history, eliminating the need to retain manual records of backups.
* The product guides administrators through each step of the recovery
process.
* It also brings the database back online.
Flexibility
Data warehouse backups can be incorporated into an enterprise-wide backup
and recovery plan. The Open Backup Stream Interface (OBSI) software modules
enable sending physical backups and exports directly to tape, magnetic or
optical disk, or various third-party storage management systems.
SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse comes with OBSI modules for direct
backup to 4mm, 8mm and DLT ANSI- labeled tapes, and for direct backup to both
magnetic and optical disks. SQL-BackTrack OBSI modules for third-party
storage management systems available from BMC Software include:
* IBM ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM)
* Legato NetWorker
* Hewlett-Packard OpenView OmniBack II
In addition, most major storage management vendors support the OBSI API
and can provide OBSI software modules for their systems.
Security
When recovery is needed, SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse helps
administrators with quick and safe procedures.
* A unique "preview" recovery verification feature lets administrators
check the validity of the backup they are about to restore, so they will know
beforehand that the recovery will work.
* SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse provides several custom recovery
options, including automatically recovering a database to the state it was in
at the time of a prior backup, and recovering individual objects without
reloading the entire database.

SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse supports Red Brick Warehouse 5.1 on
the following platforms:
* Digital UNIX for Digital Alpha
* HP-UX for HP PA-RISC
* AIX for IBM RS/6000
