Electric Lightwave Selects Sonoma Systems for ATM Broadband Access Units

VANCOUVER, Wash., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Electric Lightwave, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ELIX) today announced an agreement with Sonoma Systems to purchase
Sonoma Access unit, for use in its Transparent LAN services offering.
The three-year agreement, expected to be worth more than $1 million over
the next year, allows ELI to use the Sonoma Access System's ATM broadband
access unit for Transparent LAN service applications throughout ELI's network.
Transparent LAN provides wide area network data connectivity as a
networking solution for businesses seeking reduced equipment and
administrative costs.
"We chose the Sonoma Access system because it provides the ease of use,
price point and multiple LAN interfaces ELI requires to offer complete
transparent LAN service to our customers," said Shimizu, ELI's manager of
video and data services. "Business owners will be able to select any type of
LAN interconnection they need whether they're creating an Intranet, connecting
to the Internet, or both."
"Transparent LAN services offer wide area networking in terms that LAN
managers are familiar with," said Beth Gage, Broadband Consultant with
TeleChoice, Inc. "This eliminates the need to learn a new telecom technology
such as ATM in order to connect remote LANs."
Electric Lightwave Transparent LAN services offers the following benefits
to customers:

    * A seamless migration to ATM and improved data throughput.
    * Network architecture for enhanced data security.
    * 24-hour customer service, seven-days-a-week.
    * Flexible bandwidth that eliminates the bottlenecks of traditional LAN
      support.
    * A custom designed network to match business needs, while reducing
      equipment costs.

"ELI is recognized as the leader in data connectivity in the Western U.S.,
and their selection of the Sonoma Access reaffirms our belief that we have
built the most outstanding product available for Transparent LAN
applications," said Gregory Koss, president and chief executive officer of
Sonoma Systems.
ELI will use the Sonoma Access on the customer premises connected to
Ascend CBX 500 ATM switches to offer transparent LAN services to seamlessly
connect remote sites. ELI will deliver native 10 Mbps Ethernet, 100 Mbps Fast
Ethernet, 4 Mbps and 16 Mbps Token Ring and Fiber Distributed Data Interface
(FDDI) local area protocols over ATM fiber optic links.
