ST. LOUIS, March 5, /PRNewswire/ -- Brown Group, Inc. (NYSE: BG) today
announced divisional retail sales results for the four-week period ended
February 28, 1998 compared to the same period ended March 1, 1997. Brown
Group's retail operations include Famous Footwear, an 814-store chain selling
brand-name family footwear for less, and Naturalizer, a 340-store chain
selling the Naturalizer brand of women's footwear.
Retail sales for Famous Footwear in February were $55,800,000 compared to
$50,900,000 last February, an increase of 9.6 percent. Same-store sales
increased 4.4 percent.
The Naturalizer retail division's sales of $7,600,000 in February were up
2.7 percent compared to $7,400,000 last February. Same-store sales were up
.9 percent.
Announcement of these results was made by Harry E. Rich, Executive Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer, who said:
"Famous Footwear continued its solid performance in February, the seventh
month in a row of same-store sales increases. These results reflect the
emerging strength of men's and women's branded product that has more than
offset lower sales of athletic footwear at the stores.
"Naturalizer Retail's .9 percent same-store sales gain reflects slow sales
early in the month, and double-digit gains in the last week of February as the
business strengthened. Early results reflected lower-than-planned boot sales
due to warmer weather patterns across the country."
