Advanced Tissue Sciences Appoints David Horwitz, M.D., Ph.D. as Senior Vice President, Technology

    LA JOLLA, Calif., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ATIS) announced today that David Horwitz, M.D., Ph.D. has joined the
Company as Senior Vice President, Technology.  As Senior Vice President,
Technology, Dr. Horwitz has responsibility for research, development, clinical
research and medical affairs.
    "Dr. Horwitz brings broad experience from the academic arena and the
clinical setting, as well as industry experience," said Gail K. Naughton,
Ph.D., President and Chief Operating Officer of Advanced Tissue Sciences.
"His background and experience are especially important to us as we prepare
for the next generation of products.  We are pleased to have David join our
team."
    Prior to joining Advanced Tissue Sciences, Dr. Horwitz served as Executive
Vice President and Vice President of Medical and Regulatory Affairs at
SciClone Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 1992 to 1997.  Prior to 1992, he spent ten
years at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, most recently as Vice President,
Medical & Professional Affairs, I.V. Systems Division.  From 1979 to 1992, Dr.
Horwitz was on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and from
1972 to 1979 he was a faculty member at the University of Chicago.  Dr.
Horwitz holds a Masters in Business Administration in General Management from
Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, a Doctorate in Physiology and a
M.D. from the University of Chicago, and an undergraduate degree in Chemistry
and Physics from Harvard University.
    Advanced Tissue Sciences is a tissue engineering company utilizing its
proprietary core technology to develop and manufacture human tissue products
for tissue repair and transplantation.  The Company is currently marketing
Dermagraft-TC, a temporary covering for severe and partial-thickness burns,
under a marketing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA").
Dermagraft, the Company's living, permanent dermal replacement for the
treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, was recently recommended for approval by an
FDA Advisory Panel and is currently being marketed in the United Kingdom,
Canada and several other European countries.  The Company is also developing
products for cartilage and cardiovascular applications.
