LA JOLLA, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ATIS) announced that Dr. Gail K. Naughton, President and Chief
Operating Officer and Dr. Joan Zeltinger, Sr. Research Scientist, both of
Advanced Tissue Sciences, will present on recent advances in tissue
engineering small diameter vascular grafts. Their presentation of this
scientific data will be made at the International Society for Applied
Cardiovascular Biology in Munich, Germany on March 6, 1998.
Tissue engineered vascular grafts are being developed to repair or replace
segments of arterial and venous blood vessels that are weakened, damaged or
obstructed due to trauma or disease. Unlike traditional devices, tissue
engineered vascular grafts are designed to remain biologically interactive
after implantation, thereby providing the physiologic functions of the
replaced tissue as well as structure. Advanced Tissue Sciences' approach to
tissue engineering involves the use of completely closed bioreactor systems to
maintain sterility while mimicking a physiological environment in which cells,
seeded onto biocompatible, three-dimensional scaffolds, divide and secrete
structural matrix proteins and bioactive molecules, such as human growth
factors, to form a functional tissue.
Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc. is a tissue engineering company utilizing
its proprietary core technology to develop and manufacture human tissue

covering for full and partial-thickness burns. In addition to Dermagraft and
Dermagraft-TC, the Company also is developing products for cartilage and
cardiovascular applications.
