Seagate Software Licences Fulcrum Software Products for Far-Reaching
Customer Support Application
Fulcrum Product Family To Aid In Delivery Of Support Information -- to
Support Seagate Software Professionals, Customers, Partners -- Across the
Extended Enterprise, the Web
OTTAWA, Canada and ORLANDO, FL., Sept. 30 /CNW-PRN/ -- Fulcrum
Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: FULCF; TSE: FUL) and Seagate Software, Storage
Management Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology, Inc.
(NYSE:SEG) today announced Seagate Software has licensed Fulcrum(R)
information-retrieval software. The agreement allows Seagate Software's
Storage Management Group to use Fulcrum search software in building a customer
support application for use by Seagate Software and its customers. The
application will be used by self-supporting customers via the Seagate Software
Web site, by 100 support professionals connected to the corporate network in
four locations worldwide, and by key customers and subscribers who will
receive technical support information on searchable CD-ROMs.
"Fulcrum was selected because it offers a solid product family that fits
in with our plans today, and one that can grow and evolve to meet our future
requirements," said Michael Wentz, Director of Technical Support at Seagate
Software, Storage Management Group. "Fulcrum meets our immediate need for
software we can easily integrate with ODBC-compliant databases, like the
Sybase database and Scopus call resolution system we use. Fulcrum also offers
strong international language support, and a strong commitment to Microsoft
Windows NT and Microsoft ActiveX technologies. These are important factors in
the way we see our customer support applications growing and evolving in the
future."
"With these applications, Seagate Software confirms its leadership
position in delivering quality support to customers worldwide," said Mike
Laginski, chief operating officer of Fulcrum. "Our commitment to standards
and our comprehensive family of offerings for the enterprise and the Web are
key reasons we are selected in critical business applications. For Seagate
Software, it is also important that our strategic product direction is in line
with their own implementation plans."
Seagate Software is building two primary applications with Fulcrum
software. In the first, Fulcrum SearchServer will be integrated with a
customer support application available to 100 support professionals in four
offices, three in the United States and one in the UK. These professionals
handle worldwide customer support for Seagate Software's award-winning storage
management products, such as Seagate Backup Exec, Seagate Backup Director and
Seagate Storage Manager. Fulcrum SearchServer will be used to index and
search technical notes and support bulletins, technical white papers,
troubleshooting scripts -- all the normal content of a customer support
application. At Seagate Software, these files are in multiple formats,
including Adobe PDF files, HTML and popular word processing formats. In
addition, Fulcrum will be used to index and search text captured by the Scopus
call resolution system including call logs stored in a Sybase database.
The second project, called Orbit, is designed to produce technical support
information on the Storage Management Group Web site
(http://www.smg.seagatesoftware.com) so that customers have the option of self
support. Seagate Software Tech Notes, published internally by support
professionals using Lotus Notes 4.0, will be exported to the Web site and
published in HTML automatically, using the Lotus InterNotes product. Fulcrum
Surfboard(TM), Fulcrum's search software customized for Web servers, will be
used to index and search the Notes database on the Web. Users will be able to
enter the site and, with popular Web browsers, easily conduct searches. The
results will be ranked by relevance and will include search-term highlighting
and hit-term navigation. Fulcrum software will allow Seagate Software
customers to pose questions with keywords and natural-language phrases in
order to find useful information, and to refine their searches until they get
a resolution. With Fulcrum's powerful searching software, users do not have
to have a prior understanding of what might be causing their problems or any
knowledge of the structure of the databases they are searching through.
In addition to the Orbit database on the Web, Fulcrum Surfboard will
provide searching for general company and product information on the Seagate
Software Web site. For this project, Fulcrum's ability to handle on-the-fly
conversion to HTML for multiple file types, and to do a good job at preserving
the original formatting, was a factor in its selection.
Ultimately, the technical information from the Web site will be linked
into all other distribution mechanisms for support information. In the
shorter term, this includes the fax-back service. When the implementation is
complete, Seagate Software's BBS System and CompuServe forum will also be
seeded with the information published on the Web.
"The model for our Web project, and the reason we call it Orbit, is that
we want to `publish once, distribute to many,'" added Wentz. "We want to
avoid duplicating the effort that goes into creating a knowledgebase like
this, and to focus our energy on providing the best customer support we can."
Future plans include a CD-ROM version of the Orbit database for
distribution to customers.
