Toyota Motor Sales Chooses Red Brick for Strategic Data Warehouse

Application Provides Key Logistic Information for Improved Auto Management and
                                Reduced Costs

LOS GATOS, Calif., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Brick(TM) Systems, Inc.
(Nasdaq: REDB), The Data Warehouse Company(TM) today announced that Toyota
Motor Sales, USA, the sales, distribution and marketing division of Japan's
Toyota Motor Corporation (Nasdaq: TOYOY), has chosen Red Brick Warehouse for
the first in a series of strategic data warehousing applications to improve
auto management logistics and help reduce costs.
Toyota chose Red Brick's specialized data warehouse relational database
(RDBMS) over general purpose RDBMSs because of its data warehouse-specific
architecture and its ability to provide business users with high performance,
intuitive ease-of-use and an unrestricted dialogue with detailed data.
The first major data warehouse application on Red Brick is designed to
enable all levels of Toyota's headquarters staff to analyze the company's
vehicle logistics supply chain in order to reduce costs and lead-time while
managing a continuously changing business environment. Over the past ten
years, Toyota has been transitioning from an auto importer to a domestic
manufacturer and exporter.
"We have a very focused need in our data warehousing efforts to reduce the
time it takes to get critical information and act on that information
expediently," said Douglas M. West, senior vice president of finance,
information and human resources at Toyota Motor Sales. "Red Brick was the
clear choice over other RDBMSs for our project based on its proven technology
and quick implementation."
"Providing the software and technical assistance to enable an organization
such as Toyota to quickly implement an effective decision support application
is what sets Red Brick apart from other database vendors," said Chris Grejtak,
vice president of marketing at Red Brick. "Being a significant part of
Toyota's data warehouse plans indicates that we are continuing to provide real
value through our specialized data warehouse products and service."
Today, 60 percent of Toyota's cars sold in the U.S. are built in North
America. This dramatic change from an import company to a domestic
manufacturer has prompted Toyota to analyze changes in cost, time and
products. The data warehouse will help Toyota to better understand its
geographically-diverse operations and confidently determine key areas for
adjustment, while quickly being able to see if a new decision support process
is having a desired effect.
Toyota's Red Brick data warehouse will draw from data stored in a variety
of locations including DB2, AS/400 and IMS databases, as well as from
partner-provided files. The data, updated nightly, consists of all
vehicle-related information such as processing and delivery costs and
lead-time data. Using a variety of front-end tools, Toyota's business
analysts can query the data warehouse to obtain information to help determine
cost savings opportunities. More than 100 users are expected to access the
data warehouse, which is anticipated to hold 27 months of data. Older data
will be archived to optical storage for easy retrieval.
"We have high expectations for a quick turnaround in information delivery,
and we feel confident that Red Brick will perform as expected," said West.
"The data warehouse essentially re-engineers our process for getting data.
Our business analysts will have direct access to data, which should reduce our
data collection process to support detailed analyses from weeks to seconds.
"We've already rolled out a prototype on Red Brick that delivers all the
key information in an appropriate form for our users to understand," West
added. "Looking forward, we plan to move to an enterprise-wide data warehouse
system based on Red Brick that will allow business users from all departments
retrieve and analyze timely information that will ultimately lead to
continuously improved operations with lower costs and premier customer
satisfaction."
