Simpson Industries: Design And Development Capabilities Support Record New Business Awards

PLYMOUTH, Mich., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Simpson Industries, Inc.
(Nasdaq: SMPS), today announced new business awards for this year reached over
$65 million as of September 30. This total represents annual volume at full
production of the programs and keeps Simpson on track with its long-term sales
growth objectives. New program awards for 1996 are well ahead of the
$54 million of new business awarded to the company during calendar 1995.
"Most of the new business identified here reflects Simpson's design and
development capability," said Roy E. Parrott, President and Chief Executive
Officer. "It shows that our focus strategy is working and our full service
capability is becoming widely recognized.
"Since up to 90 percent of the cost of a product is determined at the
design and engineering stage, these awards indicate that a Simpson product
design provides the best functionality at the best value. At the formal
opening of our Technical Center in mid-October, we will be in an even better
position to demonstrate our expertise."
With most programs scheduled for the 1998-99 model years, revenue from
these programs will begin to be generated in mid-1997.
Simpson Industries supplies powertrain and chassis products to original
equipment manufacturers in the global automotive and heavy duty markets. The
company's products are focused in four groups: noise and vibration, wheel-end
and suspension, modular engine assemblies and high precision machined parts.
Simpson's 11 manufacturing units are located throughout the Midwest, as
well as North Carolina, Ontario and Mexico City.
