Microsoft Internet Explorer Starter Kit CD-ROM To Be Distributed By
Microsoft With Microsoft Internet Explorer And Windows 95, Starting Today
Fulcrum Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: FULCF; TSE: FUL) today announced that
Microsoft Corp. will provide a demonstration version of a Fulcrum(R) document
viewer, as an ActiveX(TM) control on the Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer
Starter Kit CD-ROM, available immediately. Microsoft will distribute the
Fulcrum document viewer, one of 38 premier controls, in all retail versions of
the Microsoft Internet Explorer Starter Kit. This includes the standalone
product available through Microsoft's regular retail channel as of today, as
well as the version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer Starter Kit that is
included, free of charge, with every copy of Microsoft Windows(R) 95, also
beginning today.
Fulcrum's document viewer is designed to add high-fidelity viewing to
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, and to work in conjunction with Fulcrum's
comprehensive family of information retrieval software products, including
Fulcrum FIND!(TM) , Fulcrum SearchServer(TM) and Fulcrum Surfboard(R). The
add-on allows users to view documents with native formatting intact - without
launching the native application - on Fulcrum-indexed Web servers. Fulcrum is
the first information-retrieval vendor to deliver an ActiveX-based add-on for
Microsoft Internet Explorer.
``We are pleased to see Fulcrum supporting Microsoft Internet Explorer and
embracing ActiveX,'' said David Fester, product manager for Microsoft
Internet Explorer. ``Because Fulcrum's viewer is built on ActiveX
technologies, developers can use a wide range of programming languages and
tools to make their applications and Web sites more compelling and engaging.''
``Delivering ActiveX controls is an important component of our Intranet
product strategy,'' said Peter Klante, vice president of marketing at Fulcrum.
``They provide real value to our customers who, increasingly, are implementing
strategic web-based solutions. Building on a record of technical firsts in
this industry, our advanced implementation of OCX controls has allowed us to
deliver an ActiveX-based product for the Web well ahead of all other
information-retrieval vendors.''
Fulcrum's document viewer will provide high-fidelity viewing of non-HTML
documents that have been indexed with Fulcrum search software. The
multi-object document viewer operates as a window within the Web browser, and
allows users to view over 80 file formats without requiring that they launch a
separate application. It preserves the complex formatting of the original
documents, enhance documents with search-term highlighting, and include
buttons for navigating forward and backward to other search-terms in
documents.
``Every one of our search and retrieval software products is designed to
`bridge the islands of information' across the extended enterprise,'' said
Klante. ``In combination with our server-side search software, Fulcrum's
document viewer provides a simple and cost-effective way for users to search,
view, manipulate and navigate the non-HTML information on their Intranets.''
Non-HTML formats supported by the Fulcrum document viewer for Microsoft
Internet Explorer 3.0 include a comprehensive list of RDBMS, office, and
publishing formats. Because it allows native formats to be viewed using
Microsoft Internet Explorer, Fulcrum's document viewer simplifies the task of
publishing existing corporate information on a Web server and reduces
administrative involvement in the process - a key benefit for Intranet
applications. Fulcrum's multi-object viewer is based on leading Outside In(R)
viewer technology licensed from Inso Corporation. Documents - including
common word-processing packages and most popular office formats, like
PowerPoint(R) and Microsoft Excel files, as well as WordPerfect, AmiPro, Lotus
1-2-3 and other popular formats - can be viewed fully rendered, with
search-term highlighting and forward and backward hit-term navigation.
