Fulcrum's Powerful Search Software To Be Deployed To 7000 Employees,
With Microsoft Exchange As Part Of Information Sharing And
Productivity ``Infrastructure''
OTTAWA, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ - Fulcrum Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: FULCF;
TSE: FUL) today announced that Nabisco, Inc. (NYSE: NA) has licensed Fulcrum
FIND! (TM) to enhance information sharing by over 7000 employees in 250
locations across North America. Nabisco will use the advanced information
retrieval software from Fulcrum(R) to enhance their employees' ability to
search for information in the Microsoft(R) Exchange Server messaging platform,
to provide access to Nabisco's ``corporate memory''.
``We standardized on Fulcrum FIND!, along with Microsoft Exchange Server,
as an essential component of our infrastructure,'' said Larry Fisher, senior
manager of workgroup computing at Nabisco. ``At Nabisco, the infrastructure
is designed as a platform for the corporate memory. This means that each
individual's ability to `recall' information that has been stored away -
whether it was stored by that person or by someone else in a totally different
area - is an essential ingredient. That's where Fulcrum FIND! comes in.''
``The need to share information across large organizations is stronger
than ever,'' said Peter Klante, vice president of marketing at Fulcrum.
``Nabisco's application demonstrates the value of scaleable, powerful
information-retrieval software as part of an information infrastructure.''
Fulcrum FIND!'s ability to search across multiple public folders and
mailboxes adds a powerful dimension to the information-sharing features of
Microsoft Corp.'s messaging platform.
Added Fisher: ``Even for the most general user, the Fulcrum product will
be used to index and search across several significant document repositories,
information on general business subjects, Nabisco products, and reports on
company activities. For that reason, it was essential to us that Fulcrum be
able to search across anything and everything that Exchange will store,
including information in Word, Excel, and Schedule Plus files, as well as the
information in Exchange mail messages, and message attachments of all types.
Other factors in our choice of Fulcrum included its support for 16-bit and
32-bit clients -- because, like most large organizations, our desktop
environment is mixed -- and also we liked Fulcrum's approach in Web-enabling
the product in a manner consistent with our own strategic direction.''
SHARING KNOWLEDGE AT NABISCO
Nabisco's aggressive roll-out plans will see Fulcrum FIND! deployed to all
installed Microsoft Exchange desktops by the end of March, more than 6000 of
the 7000 seats licensed. From that point on, both products will be deployed
in tandem, as part of the standard client setup. Tight integration with the
Microsoft Corp. product on the server means that Fulcrum FIND! is able to take
advantage of the Microsoft Windows NT administration tools, like SMS, which
significantly reduces the effort required to install client software in large
organizations.
SALES SUPPORT -- In addition to its use as a general search tool, Fulcrum
FIND! will be used in a number of more targeted information-sharing
applications. One such project is a custom sales support application built
using Exchange custom forms and Fulcrum FIND!. The application will use
public folders to collect information from, and share it among, the sales
organization. For instance, users will be able to tap into information on
national accounts, so that managers in specific regions can get information on
the state of the account elsewhere in the country. There are multiple
different ways to organize this information - by region, by product, by
account, by time period, and more - so that if Nabisco were to rely on the
public folder hierarchy to organize the material, users would be perpetually
lost.
``The alternative to good search software is hundreds of folders, an
endless folder hierarchy, and countless cross-references between the different
pockets of information,'' noted Fisher. ``With Fulcrum FIND!, we can provide
the information in a much more manageable structure, and users can search
across huge volumes of information in multiple folders, all at once. They can
search on pre-defined fields in the custom forms designed for the application,
which means that we can really rationalize the public folder hierarchy.''
