join technology.
    TARGETjoin, Red Brick's latest "Performance is Everything(TM)"
enhancement, is a new method for accelerating decision support queries.  It
builds upon Red Brick's advanced STARjoin(TM) and TARGETindex(TM) technologies
and utilizes adaptive bit-map indexing capabilities, multiple data
representations and high speed incremental change methodologies.
    With TARGETjoin, Red Brick is the only vendor to offer a complete range of
star join technologies needed for today's demanding data warehouse and data
mart applications.  Red Brick also is the only vendor to provide star join
technologies that can be used separately or can be combined in the same query.
This offers IT professionals and business analysts unprecedented flexibility
and best cost/performance across the widest range of queries, including the
most challenging ad hoc queries.
    TARGETjoin will ship in the next version of Red Brick Warehouse 5.0, which
is expected to be generally available in August.

optimization technologies that include STARindex(TM), STARjoin, TARGETindex,
and binary table join algorithms.  Selection of the appropriate join orders
and algorithms is performed automatically by a cost-based optimizer using
query processing metrics, not just statistical estimates.  Together these
technologies enable Red Brick Warehouse users to achieve the best possible mix
of performance, resource utilization and cost effectiveness with minimum
tuning.

    TARGETjoin -- The Technical Story
    TARGETindex is an ideal representation for compactly indexing rows and
rapidly selecting candidate rows from a single table.  TARGETjoin adapts
TARGETindex functionality to the task of joining multiple tables.  Thus, like
STARjoin, constraints on one table are effectively translated to constraints
on all other involved tables.  TARGETjoin is implemented as an internal
database operator for performing multi-table joins.
    The TARGETjoin operator exploits a selectivity-based algorithm on an
optimized n-way intersect for pruning result set size.  This lowers processing
requirements.  Furthermore, TARGETjoin is optimized to exploit efficient
bit-map operations such as UNION and INTERSECT, while at the same time
flexibly handling the full set of index representations, including B-tree
indexes.
    The compact representation of TARGETindex, coupled with the computational
ease with which TARGETindex constraints can be combined, helps ensure
tremendous performance advantages over competing approaches.  In fact, the
only technology that can surpass that of the TARGETjoin in performance is Red
Brick's own STARjoin.
