RED BRICK BUILDER FORUM USER MEETING, SAN FRANCISCO, June 11 /PRNewswire/
-- Red Brick(R) Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: REDB), The Data Warehouse Company(TM),
today demonstrated the industry's first and only aggregate-aware relational
database.
Codenamed "Vista," Red Brick's new aggregate management technology
dramatically accelerates query performance of its Red Brick Warehouse data
warehouse database, provides the industry's only comprehensive aggregate
management solution, and is an integral part of the Red Brick Warehouse
server.
Red Brick demonstrated the "Vista" technology today at its Builder Forum
'97 worldwide user meeting held here this week. It will be available in the
next major version of Red Brick Warehouse scheduled for general availability
around the end of 1997.
Red Brick's new aggregate management technology is a major "Performance is
Everything" enhancement that further extends Red Brick's query performance
leadership and adds another industry "first" to the company's lengthy list of
data warehouse technology innovations.
Industry's Only Complete Aggregate Management Solution
Red Brick's aggregate lifecycle management system is composed of three
technologies -- Aggregate Advisor, Query Rewrite and Metadata Layer -- that
specifically address the four critical issues about aggregates in data
warehouses:
1. What aggregates should be created?
2. How should the aggregates be stored?
3. How can the aggregates be queried?
4. How should be the aggregates be maintained and managed?
Aggregate Advisor is a subsystem feature that aids a database
administrator (DBA) in deciding which aggregates to create and how to store
them after they are created. The Aggregate Advisor's algorithms determine the
optimal space/time tradeoffs for performance. The Aggregate Advisor enables
the DBA to add or remove aggregate tables as usage demands change.
Query Rewrite is a subsystem feature that solves the issue of "hardcoding"
end user query tools with aggregate knowledge. With this feature, any end
user tool could create and submit "base-level" SQL which the Query Rewrite
technology then intercepts and transforms to "aggregate-aware" SQL. All this
transformation is transparent to the tool and the end user. This subsystem is
commonly referred to as an "aggregate navigator."
Metadata Layer contains the information that defines the aggregate tables
and their relationships to the associated detailed or base tables. It also
captures the hierarchical relationships found in most star schema dimensional
models.
Server-based Approach Superior to Middleware, Client Tool Approaches
Red Brick's aggregate management technology will be integral to the Red
Brick Warehouse database server. This approach is superior to
middleware -- or front end client tool-based approaches because the aggregate
management system can leverage the performance, maintenance and security
optimizations of the server and DBAs can retain maximum control and
flexibility over the single tier aggregate environment.
About "Performance is Everything"
Performance is Everything is Red Brick's company-wide initiative to extend
its leadership in delivering the most important factor for success in data
