Red Brick to Produce High-Performance Data Warehouse Backup and Recovery

    RED BRICK BUILDER FORUM USER MEETING, SAN FRANCISCO, June 11,
/PRNewswire/ -- Red Brick(R) Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: REDB), The Data Warehouse
Company(TM), today announced a development and reseller agreement with BMC
Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: BMCS), a worldwide leader in the development of
computer software for managing business-critical applications and data.
    Under the agreement, Red Brick will produce and exclusively sell an
automated, high-performance database-aware backup and recovery product
custom-built for Red Brick's data warehouse relational database.
    The SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse product is expected to offer
comprehensive backup and recovery capabilities that automate, simplify, and
shorten the time it takes to backup and restore Red Brick Warehouse-based data
warehouses.
    "The new SQL-BackTrack product we are working on with BMC Software will
address the data security and integrity requirements of terabyte-scale data
warehouses and data marts," said Paul Rodwick, director, product management

data warehouse RDBMS."

    SQL-BackTrack for Red Brick Warehouse will provide capabilities
specifically suited for data warehouse environments including on-line or "hot"
backup, partial and full backup and parallel read/write.  Red Brick will
utilize DataTools' Open Backup Stream Interface (OBSI) Modules to integrate
the database-aware backup and recovery features of SQL-BackTrack with the
storage management services offered by the most popular storage management
products, including optical jukeboxes, DLT drives, carousels and tape
stackers.
    BMC Software acquired DataTools, Inc. in May 1997, and obtained the
SQL-BackTrack product line, which provides automated, high-performance backup
and recovery of relational databases.  SQL-BackTrack is targeted for large
corporations with multiple gigabytes of mission-critical data stored on
multiple servers at multiple sites.

    Pricing and Availability
    The new offering, planned for general availability in the fourth quarter
of 1997, will replace Red Brick's current backup and restore offering.  Red
Brick will offer a migration program for current Red Brick backup and restore
customers.  Pricing was not announced.
