Reno Air Confirms Temporary Shortage of Engines During Second Quarter

RENO, Nev., July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Reno Air, Inc. (Nasdaq: RENO; PCX: RNO)
today announced that, with the celebration of its fifth year anniversary, it
expects to report strong traffic for the second quarter of 1997, despite
problems in obtaining spare engine support for its fleet. Reno Air confirmed,
however, that second quarter results have been adversely impacted by scheduled
and unscheduled engine removals and delays in engine overhauls caused by a
shortage of Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 engine parts used on MD-80 aircraft and
limited availability, industry-wide, of spare engines for short-term lease.
The resulting shortage of spare engines forced Reno Air to temporarily
ground as many as three aircraft, two of which were returned to service before
the end of June 1997. These factors led to an increase in maintenance
expense, a decrease in fleet utilization and an increase in overall unit cost.
"Despite the shortage, we have continued to maintain an excellent on-time
and flight completion percentage based on domestic airline standards," said
Robert Reding, Reno Air President and CEO. "We expect all of our aircraft to
be available for service by mid-July."
In the second quarter, Reno Air also realized one-time costs related to
the start-up of a second reservations center in Las Vegas.
