EVEREN Securities Contributes $2,500 to Washington Women in Need

    BELLEVUE, May 19, 1997 - EVEREN Securities, Inc. announced today a $2,500
donation to Washington Women in Need.  The grant was made by the EVEREN
Foundation.  Washington Women in Need provides financial assistance to low-
income women in Washington for health care and educational needs.
    In keeping with a long-standing philosophy of community involvement and
charitable giving, the EVEREN Foundation was established in 1996, and since
its inception has contributed nearly $350,000 to not-for-profit organizations.
The foundation makes direct grants to charitable organizations and matches
EVEREN employee donations to qualified tax-exempt organizations.
    In addition, the EVEREN Foundation administers EVEREN Securities'
Community Commitment Day, whereby offices throughout the country donate a
portion of a specified day's income to a local not-for-profit organization.
    Educational programs provide the primary focus of the EVEREN Foundation's
activities.  Organizations that improve skills, increase educational
opportunities and demonstrate an innovative application of technology to
teaching or learning are recipients of foundation funding.
