ATLANTA, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Pony Express Courier Corp. announced it
is changing its name to Pony Express Delivery Services, Inc., effective
Aug. 1, 1997. The modification of the official name reflects Pony Express'
commitment to provide full-scale, regional business-to-business delivery
services to new and existing customers.
Pony Express Delivery Services, Inc., a direct descendant of the original
Pony Express which began service on April 3, 1860, is America's First Express
Company. The new Pony Express is focusing on customers requiring regional
expedited delivery services. Pony Express has moved away from the "Courier"
name, which denotes small package, across-town deliveries, to "Delivery
Services," which conveys a more broad-based carrier image. Says Pony Express
CEO & President Donald G. Berger, "Pony Express was originally founded to
serve the banking industry. Operating under the Wells Fargo umbrella in the
19th century, Pony Express transported financial documents and parcels, and
continues to do so even today. We have great market penetration, and items
like financial documents get delivered to every nook and cranny in the states
we serve. We want to open up this extensive network to other businesses and
deliver bigger shipments. What we're doing is positioning Pony Express not as
just a courier but as a delivery company handling small and large packages for
virtually any industry. I believe the company offers a valuable alternative
to the national carriers, with very competitive ground service rates. Our
services are designed to compete against national carriers, and we strive to
deliver before 10 a.m. where we can. Pony Express customizes its services to
meet the unique requirements of our customers. That is what differentiates us
from normal package delivery services. When customers require a
differentiating factor to beat their competition, they call us!"
Vice President Sales & Marketing, Jeffery Hitt, is enthusiastic about the
new focus of the company. "We are committed to continuous support of our
current customer base, which includes the financial, pharmaceutical and
medical supply industries. We'd like to take the knowledge and history we've
put into our infrastructure and pass that along to our new customers. We feel
that industrial, automotive, governmental, air freight forwarders and
integrators are the logical 'next step' in Pony Express' move into the 21st
century. By offering same, next and second day customized shipments at an
extremely competitive price, Pony Express is positioning itself as the 'one to
watch.' The saddlebags of Pony Express' history are giving way to the
linehaul and ExpressLane expedited shipments of today."
President Berger agrees. "Pony Express' focus on consistent, around-the-
clock service designed for specific customer requirements will sustain our
drive into the big leagues of the delivery services market. Pony Express has
great potential. That's what intrigued me to start with, and it's why I'm
trying to broaden our market beyond the traditional bank business. We've had
an extremely good reception from our customers."
