Shiva Ships LanRover D56 and K56flex Modules for the LanRover Access Switch

Will Provide Free Upgrade to International Telecommunications Union
                                 56K Standard

BEDFORD, Mass., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Shiva Corporation
(Nasdaq: SHVA) today announced the availability of the LanRoverD56 remote
access server, the most recent addition to its award-winning LanRover(R)
product family. The LanRoverD56 is a high-performance remote access solution
leveraging T1/PRI line capacity for cost-effective implementation of ISDN and
56Kbps technology using Rockwell International's K56flex modem cards. The
product's robust feature set is available for corporate sites in 12- and 24-
port configurations. In addition, Shiva announced volume shipment of 56K
cards for its LanRover Access Switch(R) central site concentrator and a free
upgrade to the ITU 56K modem standard for Shiva's K56flex-based products.
Shiva can now deliver 56K technology to its entire customer base, from the
large enterprises and ISPs that can take advantage of the new cards available
for the LanRover Access Switch, to small and medium-sized businesses for which
the LanRover D56 is a quick-to-implement solution.
"Shiva has committed extensive resources to doing test after test on the
LanRover D56 and LanRover Access Switch with Rockwell k56flex modem cards to
ensure that our 56K product line is among the elite," said Angelo Santinelli,
senior vice president of worldwide marketing and business development at Shiva
Corporation. "And because Shiva's technology allows companies to integrate
56K with their already successful 28.8 and 33.6Kbps remote access
implementations, customers can take the risk out of implementing a new
technology."
"Shiva's success in the corporate market coupled with their Nortel
relationship make Shiva a strategic partner for corporate and telco K56flex
deployment," said Mike Henderson, marketing director, central site products at
Rockwell. "Rockwell has been the market leader in the 56K arena, largely due
to K56flex being bundled in top-notch servers like the LanRover Access Switch
and LanRover D56."

New LanRover D56 Provides Performance, Simplicity and Security
Designed to meet the remote access demands of small to mid-sized
companies, the LanRover D56 offers mobile workers, telecommuters and other
remote users reliable and secure dial-in, dial-out and LAN-to-LAN
connectivity. The newest member of the LanRover family includes:

-- Complete Feature Set: As with all Shiva LanRover products, the LanRover
D56 includes ShivaRemote(TM) PPP dial-in client software for Windows 95 and
Windows 3.1 as well as Shiva Dial-Out(TM) communications port redirection
software. The LanRover D56 offers the flexibility of supporting analog, ISDN
and PRI/T1connections concurrently at no extra cost.

-- Simple Configuration: The LanRover D56 is available in North America
with RapidInstall(TM), a customized phone installation service that enables
network administrators to make an appointment to install and configure the
remote access server in one phone call. Also available from Shiva are
comprehensive technical services to assist customers in the acquisition and
provisioning of PRI or T1 lines.

-- High Performance: The LanRover D56 design employs a multi-processing,
high-speed architecture that delivers the superior performance for which Shiva
remote server technology is known. In addition, Shiva's PowerBurst(R) remote
node acceleration software and Shiva's PowerSurf(TM) http remote net
acceleration software are supported to further enhance remote access
performance by accelerating popular applications and web browsing by up to
300% and 200% respectively, resulting in speeds similar to those achieved with
ISDN.

-- Robust Security: The LanRover D56 can act as a centralized
authentication and authorization server, and allows for a variety of other
security options, including support for TACACS+ and RADIUS and for third-party
security products. Customers can also employ a centralized database to store
authentication and authorization data for increased security and simplified
management. Using RADIUS, LanRover D56 customers can collect detailed
information such as customer ID, type of service, number called and connection
parameters.

"We have been working hard to perfect our 56K offering, and Shiva's
consistent technical excellence makes us confident that we will have the best
in the business," said Geoff Schultz, president of Ultranet. "We offer
Internet access to thousands of customers, and therefore need a reliable
powerhouse of a box. The LanRover Access Switch has been that for us."

    LanRover Access Switch 56K Support
K56flex upgrades are now in full production for Shiva's award-winning
LanRover Access Switch. Unlike remote access technology from other vendors,
the modular architecture of the LanRover Access Switch provides support for 56
Kbps, v.34 and ISDN technology in a single platform, making migration to the
higher speed technology easier and more flexible. In addition, Shiva will
offer a free upgrade to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
standard for 56K modem cards in the LanRover Access Switch, when the standard
is determined and the upgrade becomes available. At that time, software
upgrades for existing K56flex modems purchased from Shiva will be downloadable
directly to the LanRover Access Switch, preventing service interruptions.
The LanRover Access Switch, Shiva's 72-port remote access concentrator,
employs a unique multiprocessing switching architecture with 200 MIPs of
processing power. Unlike other 56K solutions, there is a CPU on each modem
card in addition to CPUs on each WAN/LAN interface, all backed up with a
central CPU module. This design enables all critical tasks to be done in
parallel, delivering higher performance speeds and data throughput while
preventing overheating, unlike pipelined, single-processor architectures. The
low latency design of the LanRover Access Switch offers improved performance
for analog dial-in. It transfers data from the digital modem chips directly
onto a high speed bus, thereby eliminating an extra step of processing, that
competitive products require via a serial controller.

    Pricing and Availability
Shiva's LanRover D56 list pricing starts at $6,999. Customers who bought
v.34 modem cards from Shiva before May 1, 1997 can trade up to the new 56K
cards for the LanRover Access Switch for the reduced price of $1,750.
Customers who bought v.34 modem cards after May 1 can trade up to 56K cards
for the LanRover Access Switch for $1,000. (Offer expires December 31, 1997)
