Harbison-Walker Names Hilkmann Vice President-Planning and Development

    DALLAS, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Industrial Technologies, Inc.
(NYSE: GIX) announces the recent appointment of Dallas international financial
specialist Dirk H. Hilkmann as Vice President-Planning and Development at its
Harbison-Walker Refractories Company subsidiary in Pittsburgh, PA.  Mr.
Hilkmann reports to Juan M. Bravo, President.  In his new position,
Mr. Hilkmann is responsible for developing short and long-term strategic
business plans to help achieve the Company's goal of continued growth on a
global basis.
    Mr. Hilkmann brings 20 years of experience in corporate finance,
multinational banking and world-wide business development to Harbison-Walker.
He most recently worked for Dallas' Bank of America as Senior Managing
Director of the Corporate Banking division.  Mr. Hilkmann joined Bank of
America in 1994 with the merger of Bank of America and Continental Bank, where
he was Senior Vice President-Managing Director of the Southwestern States
Division, a position he held since 1991.  Since 1977, he held numerous
positions at Continental Bank, starting in the Belgium Office and working in
Multinational Banking Divisions in Amsterdam, and in Chicago, where he handled
multinational corporate clients in southern California.  In 1983, he was
appointed Vice President in Multinational Banking responsible for world-wide
business development for a number of Chicago-based multinational corporations
and Texas-based multinationals.
    Mr. Hilkmann graduated from Solvay Business School of the Free University
of Brussels, Belgium, where he received his Commercial Engineering degree (MBA
equivalent).  In 1996, he received BankAmerica's CEO Teamwork Award.  He is a
member of Dallas International Bankers Association and serves on the board of
MEDISEND, a nonprofit organization that ships surplus medical supplies to
developing countries.
