Lucent Technologies Increases Call Capacity For Cable Telephony Networks With iMerge NCSG Release 3.0

PHOENIX, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU)
announced today the availability of an Internet protocol (IP) telephony
solution that allows service providers to deliver multiple full-featured voice
lines to customers who are currently limited to video and data services.
Release 3.0 of the iMerge(TM) Network-based Call Signaling Gateway (NCSG)
makes it possible for multiple system operators (MSOs) to deliver IP telephony
services to an even larger subscriber base -- more than 10,000 subscribers per
platform -- without additional equipment. In addition, the new release offers
a fully redundant integrated Etherswitch with multiple network interfaces as
well as enhanced maintenance and provisioning capabilities.
"iMerge NCSG gives MSOs the ability to combine IP telephony with their
video and data networks while retaining the reliability and quality of service
of the public switched telephone network," said Ken Arndt, vice president of
marketing at Lucent subsidiary AG Communication Systems. "The ability to
offer bundled voice, video and data service packages maximizes profits for
MSOs by reducing churn and pulling customers from local telephony providers."
The iMerge NCSG, part of Lucent's Converged Network Solutions portfolio,
is targeted to markets currently served by hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) or
fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks, from which more than 70 million cable
subscribers currently receive service. The product is currently deployed or
in trials at several major service providers in North America.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs and
delivers the systems, software and services for next-generation communications
networks for service providers and enterprises. Backed by the research and
development of Bell Labs, Lucent focuses on high-growth areas such as
