DUBLIN, Ireland, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN)
("Elan") today announced new appointments and the organisation structure of
its Elan Pharmaceuticals division.
Daniel G. Welch, who joined Elan Pharmaceuticals as its president in
October 2000, announced that Lars Ekman M.D. PhD has now taken up his position
of president, research and development, Elan Pharmaceuticals. Prior to
joining Elan, Dr. Ekman was responsible for research and development at
Schwarz Pharma AG and before this held senior research and development
positions in Pharmacia. In this role Dr. Ekman assumes responsibility for the
global research and development activities of Elan Pharmaceuticals.
Robert S. Whitehead has been appointed to the position of president
Americas, Elan Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Whitehead was formerly president and
chief operating officer of Dura Pharmaceuticals, Inc ("Dura") the San Diego
based specialty pharmaceutical company acquired by Elan in November 2000. Mr.
Whitehead will assume responsibility for all commercial operations in the
United States, Canada and Latin America including the US integration of Elan
Pharmaceuticals, Dura and The Liposome Company, Inc into a single Elan
Pharmaceuticals business unit.
Also reporting to Mr, Welch as vice president, Europe and president &
representative director, Elan Pharma K.K., Japan, will be Dr. Dai Rowley-Jones
and Mr. Motohiro Ueda, respectively.
Elan's Diagnostic businesses will now report directly to Mr. Welch under
the management of Robert Flaherty, president, Athena Diagnostics, Inc.
