Solectron Begins Operations in Ibaraki, Japan

    TOKYO, April 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Solectron Corporation
(NYSE: SLR), a leading provider of electronics manufacturing and supply-chain
management services, said today that it has begun providing manufacturing,
fulfillment and other related services, including demand forecasting, to NEC
Corporation for servers, workstations and storage products in Ibaraki, Japan,
as part of a multi-year supply and service agreement.
    As announced in October, NEC has transferred the manufacturing,
fulfillment and demand forecasting service businesses of NEC Ibaraki to
Solectron, which is leasing production and office space in Ibaraki at the NEC
Computertechno Ltd. site.  In addition, Solectron has hired about 470 highly
skilled former NEC Ibaraki employees.
    Solectron is now able to provide NEC and other customers in the server,
workstation and storage product segments with build-to-order/configure-to-
order manufacturing, final test, fulfillment and demand forecasting services
for the Japanese market. In combination with the company's existing
Asia/Pacific enclosure, design, PCBA and repair and recycling capabilities,
Solectron offers a complete one-stop solution for servers, workstations and
storage products for the Japanese market.
    Solectron first established a presence in Tokyo in 1992, and since then
has steadily expanded its leadership position in Japan. Today, Solectron's
Japan locations provide new product introduction services; embedded computer
solutions; high-complexity build-to-order/configure-to-order manufacturing;
final test, fulfillment and demand forecasting services; repair and recycling
services; and customer relationship management services.
    Terms of the agreement with NEC were not disclosed, and are not expected
to be immediately material to Solectron's financial results.
