NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- CBS, which broadcasts the highest-rated
and most-watched original television movies, will present a star-studded slate
of movie and mini-series events during the 2002-2003 season.
The mini-series include MASTER SPY: THE ROBERT HANSSEN STORY, starring
William Hurt, Mary Louise Parker and Ron Silver, based on the shocking true
story of FBI Special Agent Robert P. Hanssen, the master spy who
single-handedly created the greatest breach of security in the history of the
United States; and SALEM WITCH TRIALS, starring Kirstie Alley, Shirley
MacLaine, Alan Bates, Gloria Reuben, Rebecca DeMornay and Peter Ustinov, which
explores how the small Puritan community of Salem, Mass., succumbed to mass
hysteria in 1692, enabling a small influential force to haphazardly accuse,
jail, convict and even kill its own people after suddenly deeming them to be
witches.
The television movies to be presented include XI: RACE TO THE MOON
(working title), based on the true story of the Americans who were responsible
for putting the first man on the Moon; BACK TO THE BATCAVE: THE TRUE
ADVENTURES OF ADAM WEST AND BURT WARD (working title), reuniting series stars
Adam West and Burt Ward in a comedy adventure in which they stumble upon a
diabolical plot to steal the original Batmobile from a charity event, and
THE BOSTON STRANGLER, which explores one of the largest manhunts of the
20th century, on the trail of one of the most alarming serial killers of his
time, that may have ended in the incarceration of the wrong man.
Also, THE CROOKED E: THE INSIDE STORY OF ENRON, a true story based on the
upcoming book, Anatomy of Greed by Brian Cruver, a fast-paced and wicked
insider's look at the collapse of the Enron Corporation from the ground up;
Ira Levin's FOOTSTEPS, a dramatic thriller about a best-selling suspense
novelist who becomes the subject of a true-life crime story when she
encounters two strange men at her isolated beach house -- one of whom is there
to kill her and one who can save her; THE GREAT ONE, starring Brad Garrett,
the fact-based story of legendary comedian and television icon Jackie Gleason
from his less than glamorous start in comedy through his greatest achievement
-- one of the most popular shows in television history -- "The HoneyMooners";
and THE BATTLE OF MARY KAY, starring Shirley MacLaine in the title role, tells
the true story of the nasty corporate war between Queen of Cosmetics Mary Kay
Ash and Jinger Heath, a ruthless newcomer who launches BeautiControl, a rival
company.
Additional movie highlights include THE I LOVE LUCY MOVIE (working title),
an inside account of the celebrated, complex, passionate and tumultuous
relationship between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, as well as a fascinating
behind-the-scenes look at the creation of one of television's most beloved and
successful shows, "I Love Lucy"; MARTIN & LEWIS (working title), starring Sean
Hayes as Jerry Lewis in the poignant story of the rise to stardom and
turbulent friendship between Lewis and Dean Martin, the most famous comedy duo
of their time; THE NELSONS (working title), based on the true story of one of
the most famous families in television history -- Ozzie, Harriet, David and
Ricky Nelson; and ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, starring Carol Burnett, in a new
version of the classic Broadway musical based on the children's story
"The Princess and the Pea."
In the 2001-2002 season, CBS has presented 14 of the top 15 highest-rated
single-part television movies, including "The Pilot's Wife" (#1),
"A Town Without Christmas" (#2) and the Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of
"My Sister's Keeper" (#3).

    Among the mini-series:

MASTER SPY: THE ROBERT HANSSEN STORY (four hours), starring William Hurt,
Mary Louise Parker and Ron Silver, is based on the shocking true story of
FBI Special Agent Robert P. Hanssen, the master spy who single-handedly
created the greatest breach of security in the history of the United States.
For 22 years, he was a loving husband, a devoted father of six, a deeply
devout Catholic, a passionate anti-communist, a dedicated FBI agent and, at
the same time, a traitor the likes of which the United States had never seen
before. The mini-series will delve into the mind of a devious and dangerously
brilliant man accused of spying for the Russians. It will create an
unforgettable portrait of someone so caught up in the struggle with his own
demons that he would betray everything he held sacred -- his wife, his family,
his religion and his country. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer
(Armies in the Night, The Executioner's Song) is the writer. Lawrence
Schiller ("American Tragedy") and Mailer ("American Tragedy") are the
executive producers for Oakdale Productions, Inc.
SALEM WITCH TRIALS (four hours), starring Kirstie Alley, Shirley MacLaine,
Alan Bates, Gloria Reuben, Rebecca DeMornay, Peter Ustinov and Henry Czerny,
explores how the small Puritan community of Salem, Mass., succumbed to mass
hysteria in 1692, enabling a small, influential force to haphazardly accuse,
jail, convict and even kill its own people, suddenly deeming them to be
witches. The drama is set against the backdrop of a strict community
struggling to survive the rugged conditions in the New World colony. While
contending with various hardships of health, safety, comfort and material
well-being, they are suddenly faced with adolescent village girls who seem to
be experiencing violent demon-induced fits. The frightened community is all
too quick to believe the girls' explanation that they have become afflicted by
witches who are living among them. A ruthless witch-hunt to purge the town
and its region begins, and it is the women who are most readily accused.
During the year-long, real-life witch trials, 156 innocent people were
accused, 30 convicted and 20 executed. Ed Gernon and Peter Sussman
("Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows") and Paula Weinstein
("The Perfect Storm") are executive producers, for Alliance Atlantis, in
association with Spring Creek Productions.

    Among the television movies:

XI: RACE TO THE MOON (working title) is based on the true story of the
people who were responsible for putting the first man on the Moon. In 1960,
President John F. Kennedy challenged the nation to send a man to the Moon and
return him safely by the end of the decade. Between July 16 and 23, 1969,
that challenge was met. This is the story of the young NASA administrator who
dealt with the astronauts, each of whom wanted to be the first to set foot on
the Moon and the lead engineer who faced the enormous pressure to design and
build a spacecraft that could make the journey Moon. It is the story of the
head of mission control who led the incredible journey with computers no more
powerful than today's average laptop. Finally, it is the story of the
incredible astronauts themselves, who put their lives on the line betting on
the technology and the individuals behind it to propel them to the Moon and
into the history books on mankind's greatest adventure. Orly Adelson
("One True Love") and Scott Immergut ("Freaky Friday") are the executive
producers for Orly Adelson Productions.

BACK TO THE BATCAVE: THE TRUE ADVENTURES OF ADAM WEST AND BURT WARD
(working title) reunites series stars Adam West and Burt Ward in a comedy
adventure where they stumble upon a diabolical plot to steal the original
Batmobile from a charity benefit. While trying to unravel the details, they
flash back to the tumultuous times of their 60s television series to reveal a
bizarre behind-the-scenes story of the creation of a television classic, from
their on-the-set explosions to their wild real-life encounters with fans.
Paul A. Kaufman ("Surviving Gilligan's Island ... ") is the executive producer
for Artisan Entertainment in association with The Kaufman Company.
THE BATTLE OF MARY KAY (working title), starring Shirley MacLaine, tells
the true story of the nasty corporate war between Queen of Cosmetics Mary Kay
Ash (MacLaine) and Jinger Heath, an ambitious newcomer who launches
BeautiControl, a rival company. In an effort to win the hearts, faces and
pocketbooks of women around the world and control of this lucrative segment of
the cosmetics industry, Jinger sets out to overtake Mary Kay's $866 million
conglomerate. Over 30 years ago, Texas native Mary Kay Ash built a lucrative
cosmetics empire selling not only lipsticks and face cream but self-help and
the opportunity for self actualization as steps along the path to diamond
necklaces and pink Cadillacs. Her well-coiffed world, teeming with
chauffeurs, bodyguards and beautiful baubles, had made her a cult-figure among
ladies eager to be just like Mary Kay. Now Jinger, determined to steal her
legions of followers, begins luring women away from Mary Kay to BeautiControl
with promises of a hipper, more glamorous lifestyle. Inside the limousines,
marbled hallways and mansions that signify success in an industry built on
image, the beauty business gets downright ugly in this tale where money and
power are at stake. Peter Sussman & Ed Gernon ("Life With Judy Garland:
Me and My Shadows," "Joan of Arc") and Howard Meltzer ("Witness Protection,"
"The Pentagon Wars") are the executive producers for Alliance Atlantis in
association with Turtleback Productions.
THE BOSTON STRANGLER explores one of the largest manhunts of the
20th century, on the trail of one of the most alarming serial killers of his
time, which may have ended in the incarceration of the wrong man.
For decades, the journalists who scrutinized the case, as well as the
psychiatrist who treated Albert DeSalvo, claimed that he was not the Boston
Strangler and that his perverse desire for money and fame inspired his
confession that, in turn, may have caused him to be put to death for crimes he
never committed. Lawrence Schiller ("American Tragedy") is the executive
producer for KLS Communications, Inc.
THE CROOKED E: THE INSIDE STORY OF ENRON, a true story based on the
upcoming book Anatomy of Greed by Brian Cruver, is a tragedy, a comedy and a
lesson in the American Dream. It is the story of a 29-year old golden boy,
Brian Cruver, who started working at the Enron Corporation on April Fool's
Day, 2001, and then witnessed the collapse of the company from the ground up.
The fast-paced movie is based on facts -- some well-known, some not at all
-- and will be an unique and wicked insiders' view at one of the biggest
scandals of the decade. Robert Greenwald ("Steal This Movie"), Alys Shanti
("Redeemer") and Phil Kleinbart ("Blonde") are the executive producers for
Robert Greenwald Productions.
FOOTSTEPS is a dramatic thriller -- to be broadcast live -- about a
best-selling suspense novelist who becomes the subject of a true-life crime
story when she encounters two strange men at her isolated beach house -- one
is there to kill her and one who can save her. While writer Daisy Lowendahl
appears to have it all with a series of popular books that have been made into
movies, an adoring husband and a beautiful beachfront home, she is plagued
with anxiety and a multitude of phobias. Ready to change her life, she has
recently released the final novel in her series by taking the drastic step of
killing off the wildly popular franchise character and angering her legion of
fans. She has also decided to confront her fears beginning with a weekend of
solitude by the sea. As Daisy soon learns, killing off a much-admired
character may have sparked the start of her own demise, as her own life turns
stranger -- and deadlier -- than fiction.
Based on the unproduced stage play by famed author and playwright
Ira Levin ("Deathtrap," "Rosemary's Baby," "The Stepford Wives"), Mark Gordon
("Speed," "Saving Private Ryan") and Ken Castoff ("The Moving of Sophia
Myles," "Labor of Love") are executive producers for TVM.
THE GREAT ONE stars Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond") in the
fact-based story of legendary comedian and television icon Jackie Gleason,
from his less than glamorous start in comedy through his greatest achievement
-- one of the most popular shows in television history -- "The Honeymooners."
As the movie flashes back and forth, we learn about its creation, the
behind-the-scenes of the show, the parallels between the show and Jackie's
real life and what made the larger-than-life Gleason the man who could create
the beloved characters of Ralph, Alice, Ed and Trixie. The film also explores
events in "The Great One's" childhood that explain how the characters in
"The Honeyooners" had a relationship to Gleason that went much deeper than the
show, and how life was not always a honeymoon for this charming but tortured
and conflicted genius. Barbara Lieberman ("And Never Let Her Go") is the
executive producer for Barbara Lieberman Productions in association with
Robert Greenwald Productions.
THE I LOVE LUCY MOVIE (working title) is an inside account of the
celebrated, complex, passionate and tumultuous relationship between Lucille
Ball and Desi Arnaz, as well as a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the
creation of one of television's most beloved and successful shows,
"I Love Lucy." Fifty years ago, the magical union of Ball and Arnaz
enthralled American audiences who couldn't get enough of the fiery redhead or
her sexy Cuban husband. But off camera, the situation couldn't have been less
comedic. Backstage battles, oversized egos and the demands of phenomenal
success undermined what was once a storybook romance. Emmy Award-winners
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows,"
"Brian's Song," "Annie," "Cinderella") are the executive producers for
Storyline Entertainment.
MARTIN & LEWIS (working title) stars Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild
Award-winner Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace") as Jerry Lewis in the poignant story
of the rise to stardom and turbulent friendship between Lewis and Dean Martin,
the most famous comedy duo of their time. Their first meeting at a nightclub
in 1945 foretells the dynamics of a relationship and rivalry that would last
for the next decade and end with a bitter breakup. Martin was smooth and
confident, yet emotionally detached from everybody around him. Lewis was
insecure, and in need of love and validation from everyone, from his audience
to his partner. Despite their differences, the talented pair went on to
become one of the highest paid nightclub acts of their time and successfully
starred together in 16 hit films, on radio and on television.
Emmy Award-winners Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Life with Judy Garland:
Me and My Shadows," "Brian's Song," "Annie," "Cinderella") and John Stamos
("The Beach Boys:  An American Family") are the executive producers;
Mark Sennett is the co-executive producer for Storyline Entertainment and
St. Amos Productions in association with Columbia TriStar Domestic Television.
THE NELSONS (working title) is based on the true story of one of the most
famous families in television history. Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky Nelson
became the model for the American family in the 1950s and 60s, which forced
them to keep their personal lives well behind-the-scenes. It is a revealing
look at the highs and unfortunate lows in their private lives, including Ozzie
and Harriet's early years, and will reveal what they were like off-camera
after David and Ricky were born. Robert Cooper ("Sins of the Father"),
Judy Ranan ("Haven") and Gunnar and Tracy Nelson are the executive producers
for Artisan Television in association with Grain and Sand Productions.
ONCE UPON A MATTRESS stars Carol Burnett ("The Carol Burnett Show:
Show Stoppers," "The Carol Burnett Show") in a new version of the classic
Broadway musical based on the children's story "The Princess and the Pea."
Burnett, who defined the role of Princess Winnifred both in the play that
premiered on May 11, 1959 on Broadway and in two CBS productions -- the first
in 1964 in black and white and again in 1972 in color -- will now play Queen
Agravain, the overly protective mother of Prince Dauntless the Drab, who
devises what appears to be an impossible gauntlet of tests for the potential
princess whom he will wed. Carol Burnett, Michael Jaffe ("South Pacific"),
Howard Braunstein ("South Pacific") and Ellyn Williams ("Ken Follett's The
Third Twin") are the executive producers for Jaffe/Braunstein Films.
Among the theatrical motion pictures CBS will present during the season
are MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2, starring Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames; CIDER HOUSE
RULES, starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron and Michael Caine; WILD, WILD
WEST, starring Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh and Salma Hayek;
ONE TRUE THING, starring Meryl Streep, Renee Zellweger and William Hurt;
KEEPING THE FAITH, starring Ben Stiller, Edward Norton, Jenna Elfman, Anne
Bancroft, Eli Wallach and Holland Taylor; SHANGHAI NOON, starring Jackie Chan
and Lucy Liu; THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, starring Pierce Brosnan, Judi Dench and
John Cleese; and, SHAFT, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree and
Vanessa Williams.
