PHOENIX, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- AG Communication Systems, a subsidiary of
Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), today announced that it has finalized an
agreement with Rogers Cantel Inc. to jointly market the next generation of
wireless office telephone systems based on Time Division Multiple Access
(TDMA) technology. The agreement follows a Letter of Intent signed in August
1997 between the two companies.
Marketed in Canada under the brand name of Cantel(R) AT&T(TM) Wireless
Office Service (WOS), the service integrates the mobility of wireless
communications with the functionality of a company's office telephone system.
AG Communication Systems will provide equipment for the WOS under its
ROAMEO(R) label and also provide turnkey sales, installation and maintenance
support for Cantel AT&T customers directly and through Accord Communications
Incorporated, a distributor for AG Communication Systems based in Toronto.
Rogers Cantel will serve as the customers' single point of contact for this
product in Canada as well as all other Cantel AT&T wireless products.
"Rogers Cantel is committed to providing Canadians with the tools they
need to be productive and stay in touch, wherever they are, not only where
they work," said Robert MacKenzie, Vice President, PCS and Product
Development, Rogers Cantel Inc. "Cantel AT&T Wireless Office Service ensures
that our customers can be reached at their office phone number, no matter
where they are within the Cantel AT&T network."
"We are pleased to work with Rogers Cantel in introducing this important
new technology to customers across Canada," said Charles Schulz, Vice
President and General Manager of AG Communication Systems' wireless products
group. "The WOS integrates wireless and wireline communications and truly
represents 'anytime, anywhere' communication."
An adjunct to existing PBX, Centrex, or key systems, ROAMEO WOS enables a
standard wireless phone to act as a cordless extension of subscribers' desk
phones. The system allows users to make and receive calls and utilize all the
features of their office phones (such as call transfer, call waiting and
three-way calling) with a wireless phone anywhere in a building or campus
environment. Calls within range of the system incur no per-minute airtime
charges. Subscribers can use the same handset in the external wireless
environment giving them "one-number-reaches-you anywhere" convenience.
ROAMEO WOS is easy to install because it supports standard telephone
systems technology, including existing TDMA handsets. The system supports up
to 2,000 registered users and up to 300 digital traffic channels. With
ROAMEO, there are no access codes or menus to master. By simply turning on
the wireless handset, the service automatically registers and communicates
with the office telephone system and the outside wireless network. This
coordination ensures that all incoming calls find users so they have more time
to conduct business, wherever they are.
