Avantel, a Leading Carrier in Mexico, Taps NetSpeak's iTEL Platform to Support Launch of Carrier-Grade Voice VPN Services

NetSpeak's Voice VPN Solution Allows Tier 1 Carrier to use its Public IP
Backbone to Offer a Wide Range of Business Voice Features

SUPERCOMM 2000, Cisco Ecosystem Partner Pavillion, Booth #827 Hall A

    ATLANTA, June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- NetSpeak(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: NSPK), a
leading provider of advanced telephony solutions for Internet Protocol (IP)
networks, today announced that Avantel, a Tier 1 telco in Mexico, has selected
NetSpeak to support the launch of its Voice over IP Virtual Private Network
(VPN) services for its enterprise customers in Mexico.
Using NetSpeak's leading Voice VPN(TM) solution, Avantel will use its IP
backbone to offer its enterprise customers calling features that are typically
supported on wide area circuit switched networks. These features include both
domestic private dial plans (4 or 5 digit dialing), which will allow
enterprises to eliminate expensive public switched telephone network (PSTN)
services between their offices and thus achieve significant savings on
interoffice communications, and off-net calling, which will enable access to
low-cost, long-distance call termination worldwide.
In addition, NetSpeak's leading iTEL(TM) architecture, which supports the
Voice VPN application, will allow Avantel to easily add other value-added
applications to its customers using the same infrastructure, thus spreading
the cost of these applications across one shared, managed IP network.
In fact today at SUPERCOMM, NetSpeak announced several enhancements to its
Voice VPN solution, including new scalability features to accommodate network
expansion; flexibility attributes which will enable carriers to use a common
set of resources to support multiple customers; and the ability to tier
service pricing based on quality of service. NetSpeak's high performance,
carrier scale, Voice VPN solution will enable service providers to fully
leverage the power of their Cisco-based networks to offer a wide range of
enhanced services to their business customers.
"At Avantel, we pride ourselves on delivering solutions that meet the
unique needs of our enterprise customers," said Rodrigo Martinez, marketing
senior manager at Avantel. "Voice VPN solution is the first of many services
that we will provide across our next-generation VoIP network, which will
enable our customers to make long-distance calls with unmatched reliability to
cities across the globe."
"Avantel's selection of NetSpeak's solutions further validates the
reliability, scalability and flexibility of NetSpeak's iTEL infrastructure and
Voice VPN solution, which is uniquely designed to meet the requirements of all
telecom providers," said Lane Bess, senior vice president of sales, NetSpeak
Corporation. "Avantel is now positioned to quickly and cost-effectively meet
the telephony needs of the latest growth market for Voice over IP services:
enterprise customers."
NetSpeak's leading iTEL Infrastructure Suite, which consists of NetSpeak's
Infrastructure Suite Gatekeeper and Route Server, will support Avantel's Voice
VPN services. The NetSpeak Gatekeeper and Route Server work together to handle
an unsurpassed call volume, making the solution ideal for the high-traffic
requirements of Avantel's many enterprise customers.
The NetSpeak Infrastructure Gatekeeper has been designed to meet the
performance, reliability and scalability requirements that carriers demand. It
handles more than 100 calls per second and provides N + 1 fail over without
losing calls through an implementation of the Alternate Gatekeeper feature. In
addition, it easily scales to handle traffic loads in the thousands of E1/T1s
by simply adding additional NetSpeak Infrastructure Gatekeepers as well as
Route Servers.
NetSpeak's Route Server is unique in that it focuses solely on managing
the resources in the network and determining route priorities across the
network, separating these functions from Gatekeeper functions such as
Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA). The Route Server is
designed to support a carrier's business policies such as least cost routing,
percentage based routing, quality-based routing and time-of-day routing.
Because the NetSpeak Route Server manages the VoIP ports in the network,
carriers can add multiple Application or Feature Servers (e.g., Application
Gatekeepers) to the physical network, yielding improvements in port
utilization and better return on capital by allowing several applications to
run across a common infrastructure.
Implementing the NetSpeak Route Server along with the NetSpeak
Infrastructure Gatekeeper provides network carriers with several key benefits,
including simplified administration and resource management; strong policy
management; multiple applications support across a common physical network;
and open interfaces for integration with best-in-class third party products.
NetSpeak's iTEL platform is by design supportive of H.323, SIP and MGCP
and other emerging VoIP standards, protecting a carrier's infrastructure
investment by ensuring that its network will be compatible with existing and
future VoIP standards.
