Granted Patent Number 6,223,937 for 'Portable Dispensing Bottle'
WYCKOFF, N.J., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Dishwasher Magic LLC today announced
that the U.S. Office of Patent and Trademark has granted the Company patent
number 6,223,937 for its "portable dispensing bottle with dissolvable wax plug
at the inlet." This patented application technology delivers the proprietary,
all-natural DISHWASHER MAGIC(R) cleaning solution into the dishwasher at the
optimal time, providing for maximum automatic removal of lime scale, iron
stains, soap scum and grease from the family dishwasher. The patent was
granted on May 1, 2001.
"The approval of the patent application recognizes the uniqueness of my
invention, which I am convinced is the most significant innovation in the
150-year history of the dishwasher," said Kevin Schmidt, CEO of Dishwasher
Magic LLC, and inventor and patent holder of DISHWASHER MAGIC. "Patent
approval further establishes that DISHWASHER MAGIC is a one-of-a-kind product,
making it even more obvious that this automatic dishwasher cleaner should be
in every home in America where there is a dishwasher."
"In the eternal entrepreneur's quest to build a more perfect mousetrap,
patent approval of this application technology tells the world that I have
succeeded in achieving a true innovation," Schmidt continued. "In addition,
this patent tells consumers that no other product is -- or can claim to be --
DISHWASHER MAGIC."
Summary of the Invention
The patent granted to Schmidt is for a portable dispensing bottle with a
dissolvable wax plug at the inlet that overcomes a number of problems
associated with cleaning a dishwasher.
First, dishwashers accumulate calcium, lime scale, etc., over time,
particularly where there is hard water. DISHWASHER MAGIC addresses two
operational issues associated with residential dishwashers. First, in the
majority of dishwashers, a short duration pump cycle removes all liquid in the
dishwasher. Therefore, any cleaning agent added prior to the wash cycle is
removed before it can work. Second, the cleaning agent compartments of most
dishwashers are incapable of holding a sufficient quantity of the non-viscous
liquid cleaning agent to work effectively. These design limitations of the
typical residential dishwasher are directly addressed by the patented
DISHWASHER MAGIC dispensing bottle.
With the patented application technology employed by DISHWASHER MAGIC, the
proprietary cleaning solution is dispensed only during the full wash cycle,
after the interior water temperature has reached the melting point of the wax
plug in the neck of the DISHWASHER MAGIC bottle.
DISHWASHER MAGIC is Unique
DISHWASHER MAGIC is the only solution designed to automatically clean the
residential dishwasher. To use the product, the consumer simply unscrews the
outer cap, places the bottle upside down in the silverware basket of an empty
dishwasher, and starts the appliance on the normal wash cycle. During the
wash cycle, the DISHWASHER MAGIC formula is automatically released by the
patented application technology.
Once released in the dishwasher, the solution in DISHWASHER MAGIC
increases the solubility of the lime scale buildup. The solution also
dissolves the soap scum, food oils and greases left behind during the normal
operation of the machine. After the scale and greases dissolve, they are
flushed away by the rinsing cycle of the dishwasher.
The consumer never comes in contact with the proprietary cleaning agent,
and simply recycles the empty bottle at the end of the wash cycle.
Lime Scale Buildup and Dishwashers
According to 1997 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, there are 109 million
homes in the United States and approximately 98% have hard water.
Eighty-seven percent (87%) or approximately 90 million of these homes have
dishwashers. Interestingly, the states with the largest concentrations of
household dishwashers -- such as the Northeast, Florida, Texas and California
-- are also the regions with the hardest water in America.
The performance and useful life of every dishwasher in the United States
is directly affected by the quality of the water used in the dishwashing
process. Chief among the deposits that shorten the life of the average
dishwasher is lime scale, which is composed of calcium and magnesium
carbonate. Lime scale is insoluble in water and resistant to the normal
alkaline detergents routinely used in automatic dishwashers. Food oils,
grease and particles being removed from the dishes combine with the hot water
and detergent and cling to the filter screen, jets and pump. Over time, the
impact of accumulations resulting from hard water reduces the overall
efficiency and performance of the dishwasher.
Billion Dollar Annual Cost of Replacing Dishwashers
The financial cost of this lime scale buildup is significant. Consumers
spend more than $1.8 billion on dishwashers for existing homes each year, with
many replacing units that no longer provide an acceptable level of consumer
satisfaction.
"When I began to solve the problem of how to clean the family dishwasher,
I was motivated by personal reasons. My dishwasher didn't clean the family
dishes, and the appliance repairman who came to service the machine said
nothing could be done to solve the lime scale buildup robbing my dishwasher of
its performance," Schmidt continued. "I knew that there must be some solution
other than discarding an appliance years before the end of its useful life. I
set out to create something to solve this personal problem in a safe and
effective way. I ended up addressing a multi-billion dollar a year problem,
being granted a patent on a true innovation in cleaning, and seeing my product
being used by thousands of consumers across the country."
