PHOENIX, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Universal Wireless Communications
Consortium (UWCC) has announced the 1999 recipients of its Global Awards. AG
Communication Systems, a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies, received the
UWCC's award for Product Launch of the Year for its ROAMEO wireless office
phone system.
Introduced in May 1999, ROAMEO allows a standard cellular or PCS phone to
act as a wireless extension of a subscriber's desk phone. The system permits
users to make and receive calls and utilize all the features of their office
phones wirelessly anywhere in a building or campus environment. Calls within
range of the system incur no per-minute airtime charges. Subscribers can use
the same handset in the external wireless environment, giving them
"one-number-reaches-you-anywhere" convenience.
"AG Communication Systems' innovative product creates a path for operators
to enter the wireless office service market, continuing in the spirit of
developing and expanding opportunities for TDMA-EDGE operators to meet the
needs of their customers," said Sheila Mickool, president of the UWCC.
TDMA-EDGE (Time Division Multiple Access -- Enhanced Data rates for Global
Evolution) is the most widely used wireless technology in the western
hemisphere, with the largest number of subscribers and the greatest number of
wireless operators. The International Telecommunications Union recently
accepted EDGE in May 2000 as a Third Generation (3G) technology as part of the
UWC-136 3G proposal.
"The UWCC Global Awards symbolize the efforts put forth by the UWCC
membership to develop and promote TDMA-EDGE products and services around the
world," said Mickool. "Since the awards are based on recommendations from
peers within the UWCC membership, the acknowledgement of the winners is
especially impressive."
"AG Communication Systems and the entire ROAMEO team are very pleased with
the recognition provided by the UWCC membership in selecting ROAMEO for this
prestigious award," said Chuck Hellquist, vice president of wireless products
at AG Communication Systems. "By offering this unique wireless office system
solution to more than 40 customers to date, ROAMEO provides great benefit to
our enterprise customers, our TDMA partners as well as the TDMA wireless
industry."
The UWCC is a Bellevue, Wash.-based international consortium of more than
